DESCRIPTION:Dormant season pruning of fruit trees is one of the best tools farmers and gardeners have in maintaining and optimizing orchard and fruit tree health! It is also one of the most peaceful and pleasant outdoor tasks during the colder months. Join us for a deep dive on apple tree pruning and care this February with Matt Kaminsky\, aka Gnarly Pippins. In this workshop\, we’ll unpack the theory and practice of pruning fruit trees with a focus on apples. Whether you’re a beginner hoping to learn a new skill\, or an old pro hoping to review and brush up\, this will be a useful workshop with hands-on opportunities to work on some trees and build up your pruner’s confidence with. \nMatt Kaminsky is an orchardist and farmer from Western Massachusetts whose specialties include wild apples\, old orchard restoration\, grafting and topworking\, & orchard silvopasture (integration of sheep into orchards). He is known by the moniker “Gnarly Pippins”\, a nod to the wild apples that inspire his passion and his website where he maintains a blog and webshop offering copies of the numerous books he has written about apples\, as well as selling scionwood\, saplings\, and other orchard-related merchandise. He farms full time in Hadley and Sunderland MA with his partner Rachel Haas and together they own & operate Meadowfed Lamb Silvopasture\, which is part of the Preservation Orchard Co-op. DESCRIPTION:NESFI will host a workshop on tractor safety. The workshop will take place on October 25\, 2025 from 10 to 2 pm with a 40-minute break for lunch and conversation. \nJim Carrabba\, Agricultural Safety Specialist with the Northeast Center for Occupational Health and Safety [NEC]\, will lead the session. Participants will receive an hour of classroom instruction\, followed by demonstrations on tractor and PTO safety. \nThis workshop will cover the following areas: \n· Tractor injury statistics \n· Basic Safe Tractor operating principles \no Overturn prevention & importance of ROPS (Rollover Protective Structures) \n§ The ROPS Retrofit Rebate Program will be covered explaining how this program works \no This training will cover the areas required for OSHA annual tractor safety under 1928.51 Appendix A and can meet that training requirement for your farm (applies to farms with more than 10 employees) \no PTO (Power-Take-Off) safety and Retrofit PTO shields offered by the Northeast Center will be demonstrated \no Safe Operation of tractors on public roads \n· How to perform operator checks \n· Safety features on new vs. old tractors \nAll are welcome\, but space is limited so best to register early. Hear us out – farm managers are pretty similar to symphony conductors in a lot of ways. A symphony conductor decides what set of songs are being played and in what order. They need to make sure all musicians know their roles and cues for starting and stopping\, who is taking the lead\, who is supporting. When everyone is clear and the team is strong\, it’s music to our ears\, and when there is miscommunication or the flow is off\, yikes.  \nThe same goes for farming. The setlist is the task list and the orchestra is the farm crew. Delegating a farm crew\, like conducting a symphony\, takes a lot of specific skills like foresight\, communication and observance. You are facilitating the work and ensuring that it’s happening in a harmonious way.  \nDelegating as a manager is crucial for any farm’s success\, not to mention crew satisfaction. It can feel really good to get through a task list as a team where everyone feels seen and heard and like their skills are being utilized. But delegation can be tricky – knowing how long a task will take\, making sure no one is stuck with the same monotonous job every time\, balancing the power dynamics of being the manager of the crew while also trying to keep your boss satisfied (always the buffer never the bride)\, building skills among the crew while also trying to be motivating. Delegation is the true unsung hero of a happy farm. \nJoin us at this upcoming Free School for Farmworkers session where we will focus on these skills! This session will be co-facilitated by seasoned farm managers Sarah Bell and Abby Benson. Join us at Native Plant Trust’s Nasami Farm for a behind-the-scenes look at how standard agricultural practices can scale small amounts of wild collected seed into the larger quantities needed for habitat restoration and horticulture. Native Plant Trust staff will lead guests on a walking tour of Nasami’s Seed Hub\, complete with stops at the seed increase plots\,  the seed processing facility used to clean the harvest\, and the climate-controlled storage facility that houses the seed once it’s clean. Along the way\, visitors will receive an overview of the protocols used to produce native species\, emphasizing seed harvesting techniques and processing methods with an opportunity for hands-on demonstrations. We will also discuss how to access funding and other forms of assistance through the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). \nThe Hampden-Hampshire Conservation District will demonstrate its newest addition to their equipment program – a Stoltzfus 4-ton multi-purpose spreader\, which will apply a custom blend of biochar and compost to Jono Neiger’s agroforestry system. This versatile tool is available through HHCD’s equipment rental program and can be used to apply a range of amendments that increase soil fertility and health\, and build long-term climate resiliency. SUMMARY:Agroforestry Crawl: Three farms in one day!
DESCRIPTION:Register here! \nJoin CISA on Friday\, September 26th for an all-day Agroforestry Crawl visiting three innovative western MA farms with agroforestry systems on their land.  \nWe start out at The Long Game Orchard in Northfield\, a 6-acre silvopasture farm with tree crops including chestnuts\, American persimmons\, Asian pears\, Yellowbud hickory\, and pawpaws. The farm is also experimenting with fodder and biodiversity hedges and is transforming an adjacent secondary forest fragment into a silvopasture system. From there we travel to Firefly Farm in Sunderland\, a 25-acre no-till farm with perennial herbs\, a no-till veggie area and orchards of heartnuts\, hazelnuts and chestnuts. Finally\, we hit Carr’s Ciderhouse and Preservation Orchard in Hadley for a look at their apple orchards that are integrated with grazing flocks of sheep and chickens based on the farm and raised in collaboration with Meadowfed Lamb.  \nVisits to each farm include farm tours and conversations with the farmers and participants. Although we encourage participants to attend all three farm tours\, you may select one or two tours to attend if you’re not able to commit to the full day. \nFood: CISA will provide some snacks but otherwise food will not be provided on the tour. DESCRIPTION:Barstow’s Longview Farm will be offering a free walking farm tour at 10:00am with a focus toward climate. We will visit our anaerobic digester\, which converts food waste and cow manure into green energy. Stand in a bunk silo and consider how dairy farms keep land open in our community. Check out the dairy barn and learn how our farm is doing more with less while adapting to hotter summers. We’ll end at the calf barn before returning back to Barstow’s as a group. \nThe tour begins promptly at the top of the stairs at Barstow’s Dairy Store and Bakery. Please park in the bakery’s parking lot or along Barstow Lane. Please note we will not accommodate late arrivals! Wear shoes that can get muddy and clothes that can smell like a cow. The walking tour is about 1/4 mile\, takes around 1 hour\, and involves hills\, uneven terrain\, weather\, and is mostly outdoors.
