Structured Decision Making (SDM) is a decision making process that integrates empirical and on-the-ground data with values-based objectives. SDM provides outcomes that are grounded in reality and represent the ethics\, values\, and desires of those individuals involved in decision making. SDM is the standard decision making process used by the US Fish and Wildlife Service\, and this workshop transfers the steps of SDM from the field of wildlife conservation to the field of sustainable agriculture. During the workshop you will learn about\, practice\, and apply the steps of SDM to specific on-farm decisions thanks to Assistant Professor\, Curt Gervich from SUNY Plattsburgh. At the end of the session you will have the skills you need to implement and adapt this process to your specific farm. Farmer\, Marco Turco from Manzini Farm will share his experiences using this tool for decision making. \n \nLocal Hero member- $90Non-Local Hero member- $110 \n \nLocal Hero member- $18Non-Local Hero member- $20 \n   \n\n \n\n\nFunding for CISA’s Reducing Risk & Increasing Profitability with Sound Decision Making Series is provided by the Northeast Center for Risk Management Education and by individual contributors and Local Hero members. SUMMARY:Film Screening: Root Hog or Die
DESCRIPTION:The New Salem Agricultural Commission begins its 2016 educational workshop series with a viewing of the film Root Hot or Die on February 18th at 6:30 pm at the New Salem Library. The presentation will be followed by a discussion with the filmmaker Rawn Fulton. \nAbout the Film:\nFrom early Colonial times\, the rural hilltowns of New England have been home to generations of dairy farmers. They earned their living through a remarkably varied combination of seasonal activities and incessant daily chores — maple sugaring\, plowing\, planting\, cultivating\, haying\, logging\, clearing fields\, building stone walls\, mending fences\, harvesting crops\, cutting\, splitting and stacking firewood\, breeding\, doctoring\, trading and slaughtering their cattle\, pigs\, sheep\, chickens and horses; while also daily milking & feeding their herds\, mucking stalls\, cooking\, cleaning\, tending home fires and raising their families. \nAll the while they supported each other in tightly knit communities sustained by shared values\, mutual needs\, and respect for the land. \nWhen Jefferson envisioned the citizenry essential for the success of America’s experiment in democracy\, these were very possibly the type of agrarian people he well knew and had in mind: self-reliant\, hard-working\, good-humored\, neighborly\, and blessed with common sense. \nRoot Hog or Die is a portrait of a living remnant of this once pervasive but rapidly vanishing way of life. Filmed in 1973 in hilltowns across Western Massachusetts and Southern Vermont\, it follows the cycle of the farming year from spring to winter. In its course we visit with an array of elders\, who reflect on farming’s deep natural patterns\, share their family histories and personal memories\, and ponder the inevitable forces of technological and social change they have endured. The bittersweet nature of their challenges is manifest\, as is the quiet pride they take in their lives as farmers.

SUMMARY:Winter Farm Law Education Series: Sales 2 - Contracts for Planning Ahead of Production
DESCRIPTION:Some of the strongest\, most resilient farm businesses sell all their product before they drop a single seed in the ground. Does contracting for sales ahead of your production sound good to you? Attend this tutorial to learn the legal ins and outs of these relationships. We will explore the unique sales arrangements farmers are creating such as selling their labor or services\, as well as participating in priority systems for sales. These new structures require a new type of contract. In this tutorial\, we will go through the process of developing a contract for production services and how to build strong sales relationships that fall outside of the traditional buyer-seller format. \nRegister for the tutorial now!

SUMMARY:Seed Swap
DESCRIPTION:LEARN about seed saving. CELEBRATE the magic of seeds. SHARE seeds that you’ve saved from your farm or garden (or seeds that you’ve purchased). TAKE HOME seeds to plant. MEET other people who see regionally adapted seeds as an important part of a healthy food system. COME even if you don’t have seeds to share! Register for the swap here. \nWhat is a Seed Swap? \nA gathering of people\, usually gardeners and farmers\, who have come together to share seeds. The seeds can include locally saved seeds\, excess bought seeds\, seeds brought back from another region or country\, or excess seeds that a seed company donated — you decide what you want to swap. Seeds are spread on tables and you choose what you want. The main idea is to bring people together to share seeds. (text from Seed Matters and Seed Savers Exchange) If you are bringing seeds to the Swap\, please see below for more information. \nWhat should I do if I’m bringing seeds to the Swap? \nYou can drop your seeds off as early as 8:30 am the day of the Swap. Swapping begins at 11 am so get your seeds there before 11 am. Please label clearly the name of the plant and the variety and the year the seeds were collected or purchased. If you know the germination rate\, you can include that\, too. You can bring the seeds in individual packets or in jars\, yogurt containers\, bags or any other container that makes sense to you. The organizers of the Swap will be sorting and placing seeds by plant families. If you know a story about where the seed comes from that you want to share\, feel free to write something up to put next to your seeds. You’re also welcome to bring a photo or drawing of the plant that will emerge. Swapping will go from 11am – 1pm. \nWhat else will be happening at the Swap? \nThere will be workshops on Beginning Seed Saving with Danny Botkin from Laughing Dog Farm and On Farm or In Garden Plant Breeding with Tevis Robertson-Goldberg of Crabapple Farm. More workshops will be announced here as they are figured out. See schedule below for timing. \n10-10:30 am Welcome \n10:45-11:30am  Beginning Seed Saving with Danny Botkin from Laughing Dog Farm \nDescription to follow. \n11am-1pm Ongoing Seed Swapping \n11:30 am-12:15 pm On Farm or In Garden Plant Breeding with Tevis Robertson-Goldberg \nTevis runs Crabapple Farm in Chesterfield\, MA. Many of the vegetable\, flower and herb plants and produce that Crabapple Farm sells at Tuesday Market and the Northampton Winter Market are grown from seeds bred and saved on their farm. Learn about some of the ingenious ways that these farmers grow food and save seed at the same time. \n11:30 am-12:15 pm To be announced \n12:15-1 pm To be announced \n1 pm Closing \nThere will be a seed guessing activity and a carrot seed project (to make seeding/thinning them easier in the spring). Bring a potluck snack to share. Thanks to Seed Savers Exchange and High Mowing Seeds for seed donations and for providing open-pollinated and regionally adapted seeds. For more thoughts on the potent power of seed swaps and seeds\, read our friend\, seed keeper and owner of Sierra Seeds Coop\, Rowen White’s blogpost. \nQuestions? \nVisit our website– http://www.northamptontuesdaymarket.com/ \nEmail us — northamptontuesdaymarket@gmail.com or clem@growfoodnorthampton.com. \nOr call 413.320.5964.

SUMMARY:PVGrows Forum
DESCRIPTION:Save the Date! The 2016 PVGrows Forum will be held Wednesday\, March 9th at Gateway City Arts in Holyoke\, MA. This year\, the forum centers around the topic “Local Food\, Healthy Communities.” We hope you’ll join us. \nThe 2016 PVGrows Forum will examine the ways in which health and local food are connected\, and specifically how issues of access\, affordability and equity in our local food system impact health outcomes for our communities\, and disproportionately so for poor communities and communities of color. \nDespite the strong local food movement in Western Massachusetts\, many in our region struggle to gain access to healthy\, affordable fruits and vegetables. Low income families in both urban and rural areas may not have food stores nearby\, and those that are accessible may not carry healthy\, let alone local and culturally relevant\, produce. In Western Massachusetts\, the majority of people of color live in urban areas\, where the quality and selection of produce is poorest\, making fresh and healthy local food a racial and economic equity issue. At the 2016 Spring Forum\, we will deepen the dialogue and working relationships between the healthcare sector and the local food movement\, identify barriers to healthy local food\, and highlight work that is already increasing the availability of locally grown food for individuals and institutions. \nPVGrows Forums are annual events that bring 100-150 people interested in the food system of the Pioneer Valley together to spend a day deeply exploring one crucial topic. \nJoin us at the 2016 PVGrows Forum to explore how health outcomes can be improved by linking local agriculture and under-served communities.

SUMMARY:2016 Ecological Landscape Alliance Conference
DESCRIPTION:Immerse yourself in a two-day exploration of ecological concepts that support living landscapes!\nOur 2016 Annual Conference brings together well-known experts for a lively exchange of information and experiences and exhibitors showcase the newest ecological products and services at the Eco-Marketplace. On Wednesday\, choose from two daylong Focus Sessions: An in-depth look at protecting and building soils and how to incorporate permaculture principles into the conventional landscape. Thursday’s topics include restoring the urban forest\, the best use of native cultivars\, designing with plant communities\, and the latest in energy efficient technology to light up your landscape. Join us as we look at strategies to create and maintain healthy ecosystems. \nMarch 9th \nTwo Focus Sessions\, Keynote Lunch\, and Keynote Dinner\nBuilding and Managing Soils from the Top Down \nSoil supports plants\, and in turn\, plants and organic matter are essential to protecting and building soil. As designers and managers of the land\, we need to understand these individual components as well as how they function as part of a larger system. Our speakers will share strategies for remediating compromised soils and stabilizing slopes\, discuss plant design and selection for poor soil conditions\, and illustrate ways to support the natural cycling of nutrients and water. Join us for a comprehensive look at how our designs and landscape practices can provide maximum protection and restoration of soil. \nPermaculture Applied to Conventional Landscapes \nAs stewards of the land\, we need to ask ourselves how we can improve on traditional practices to ensure that the landscapes we create and manage are more resilient against pests\, diseases\, and climate changes. As resources become scarcer\, we need to ask how we can reduce our dependence on inputs and maintenance. Permaculture\, based on mimicking natural processes\, offers some solutions. Presenters for this session will introduce principles and practices of permaculture\, demonstrate how these techniques can be incorporated into conventional landscapes\, and show examples of successful application in the traditional landscape settings. \nKeynote Luncheon\, Philip Korman 12:30-2:00pm \nGrowing Local\, Buying Local: Community Support Makes a Difference!\nCommunity support can make a difference! Mr. Korman will discuss how Community Involved In Sustaining Agriculture (CISA) has changed the local farming and food economy. He will show what is unique to Western Massachusetts’ Pioneer Valley and what others have done to inspire local farming. \nPhilip Korman is the Executive Director of Community Involved In Sustaining Agriculture (CISA). Started in 1993\, CISA is the longest running “buy local” organization in the nation. Their mission is to strengthen local agriculture by building connections between farmers and the community. \nKeynote Dinner\, Tradd Cotter 6:30-8:30pm \nMycoremediation: Healing Compromised Ecosystems with Fungi\nMany species of fungi sweat powerful enzymes capable of molecular disassembly of complex molecules such as hydrocarbons and pesticides. A few species of fungi are also well adapted to filter\, stun and destroy pathogenic bacteria. Learn how fungi perform these tasks and how to develop a filtration system that is customized to fit your needs. Mr. Cotter will focus on biomass expansion\, site engineering\, and species of fungi that can be used for mycoremediation projects. He will also discuss using fungi for pest management\, habitat restoration\, and how to incorporate fungi into bioswales to capture pollutants from site runoff. \nTradd Cotter is a microbiologist\, professional mycologist\, and author of Organic Mushroom Farming and Mycoremediation\, a best-selling mushroom cultivation guide. In 1996 he founded Mushroom Mountain\, focusing his interests on the use of native plants and fungi to create urban ecosystems that are more functional and compatible with the local plant and wildlife communities. He currently maintains more than 200 species of fungi for food production\, for mycoremediation of environmental pollutants\, and as natural alternatives to chemical pesticides. Mr. Cotter’s current research focuses on the development of target-specific mycopesticides that could replace conventional chemical products for agriculture. \nMarch 10th \nOne Demonstration\, Eight Sessions\, Plus Four Idea Exchange Panel Discussions\nDemonstration \n\nLandscape Lighting Demonstration\nLukas Sturm – Lumen Studio\, Inc.\n\nSessions \n\nLight Up Your Landscape\nLukas Sturm – Lumen Studio\, Inc.\nTree Filter Systems for Stormwater Management\nPaul Iorio – StormTree\nDesigning with Plant Communities in Mind\nClaudia West – North Creek Nurseries\nRestoring the Urban Forest\nMatthew Stephens – New York City Parks\nCreating an Urban Refuge: Mt. SUMMARY:CISA Winter Workshop Series: Business Decisions You Can Live With
DESCRIPTION:CISA will hold a ten-workshop series on Reducing Risk & Increasing Profitability with Sound Decision Making starting in January 2016. These workshops will provide tools for and examples of building decision making into the cycles of farm life to improve long-term profitability and sustainability. Participation in the whole series is encouraged\, and to be eligible for free one-on-one consultative support\, you must attend three workshops and be a cohort meeting participant. Dinner will be served at each session.  The cost to attend the series is $90 for Local Hero members\, or $18 for each individual workshop. The non-member fee is $110 for the series\, or $20 for each individual workshop. Contact Devon Whitney-Deal or call (413) 665-7100 x22 with any questions or register below. If cost is a barrier to your participation please feel free to contact Devon to discuss options as we want everyone to be able to get the training they need to effectively operate their business. \nWhen farms assess new enterprises\, investments\, markets\, or products\, they need to consider many factors\, including how the new activity will impact personnel needs\, family life\, seasonal schedule\, and existing enterprises. In addition\, farmers also need to assess and plan for new risks that may arise as a result of the new activity. This workshop will discuss the broader context of business decision-making and include a panel of farmers\, Wally Czajkowski– Plainville Farm\, Allison Landale– The Bars Farm\, and Sorrel Hatch– Upinngil Farm\, that have extensive experience making a great number of business decisions throughout their years of operation. They will share the broad implications of business decisions they have made\, giving participants examples of how they identified and weighted risks\, challenges\, and opportunities on their farm. \nLocal Hero member- $90Non-Local Hero member- $110 \n \nLocal Hero member- $18Non-Local Hero member- $20 \n   \n\n \n\n\nFunding for CISA’s Reducing Risk & Increasing Profitability with Sound Decision Making Series is provided by the Northeast Center for Risk Management Education and by individual contributors and Local Hero members.
