SUMMARY:Embracing Earth's Diversity
DESCRIPTION:Joseph Simcox\, a botanical explorer and world food plant ecologist\, has spent decades traveling the globe documenting\, tasting\, and collecting the seeds of thousands of rare and underutilized edibles. Visiting over 100 countries and collecting the seed of 15\,000 crop varieties and wild species\, Joseph’s experiential knowledge lends a fresh analysis to how we can innovate agriculture in the face of climate change and reclaim a more balanced and harmonious relationship with the natural world. \nWith over 50\,000 known species of edible plants in the world\, it is befuddling to think that globally we depend on fewer than 20 to provide 90% of our food. Some estimate that in the last century alone three-fourths of all known food crops slipped into extinction. \nAre these crops irreversibly and irrecoverably lost? Not so! Learn how you can contribute to reviving crop diversity right here in the Pioneer Valley. In promotion of Joseph’s Garden Across America project he will be giving out FREE seeds from his Rare Vegetable Seed Consortium to passionate individuals and local organizations who are interested in growing out\, selecting\, saving\, and returning a portion of the seeds back to the project for further promotion. After all\, “the best seed bank is in the soil.” \nThis is an awesome opportunity to take home some truly unique heirloom varieties for those who are interested! \nTo learn more about Joseph and his projects check out these websites: \n·      explorewithjoseph.com\n·      gardensacrossamerica.com\n·      growrareseeds.com

SUMMARY:Workshop: Soil Testing and Fertility Management
DESCRIPTION:The goal of this class\, taught by Zach Wolf\,  is to have participants work through the process of drafting soil management plans.  We will look at example soil tests and go through the process of calculating amendment application rates.  The latter part will cover how to integrate soil mineral amendments with the management of cover crops\, compost\, mulches and inoculates to create a holistic soil management plan.  We will talk about pasture management\, but the bulk of the class is specific for vegetable growers. \nFor more information visit the Stone Barns Center Website.  \nWorkshops are free and open to the public. To register\, contact Laurie at laurief@stonebarnscenter.org. \nGrowing up in Northwest Connecticut\, Zach Wolf was surrounded by farms and protected land. After graduating from Columbia University with a B.S. in biology\, Zach returned to Connecticut to work at Whippoorwill Farm\, a 400-acre grass-fed beef operation. From 2009 – 2011\, he served as field foreman at Stone Barns Center\, and then went on to co-manage The Locusts on Hudson\, an 80-acre estate in Staatsburg\, N.Y.\, where he has raised livestock\, vegetables and herbs and developed an on-farm apprentice-training program.  While co-managing in Straatsburg\, Zach directed the Growing Farmers Initiative at Stone Barns for a year before returning to The Locusts full time.

SUMMARY:Farming in Community Conference
DESCRIPTION:This is a networking event and the first of what will be a series of ongoing discussions and events regarding farm-based communities and community-based farming in the Northeast. The goal of this event is to bring together farmers\, aspiring farmers\, community-experienced folks and community-seekers to connect and discuss viable community-based farming models.\n\n\n \n\n\nAre you a land-less farmer (or wanna-be farmer) who is eager to take the plunge into full-time farming but don’t have the resources to do it alone? \nAre you a firm believer in community living\, who seeks others to live in community with? \nAre you a farmer considering bringing other self-driven farmers onto your farm to live and work? \nAre you a farmer without a retirement/succession plan\, but wish to keep your land in production? \nAre you a landowner considering shifting ownership of your land to a non-profit/community-based organization? \nAre you looking for alternative ways to fund community/farm projects that don’t include mountains of debt? \nWould you like to live in an inter-generational ecovillage where you can plant thousands of trees that your grandchildren will some day enjoy? \nDo you aspire to be involved with large scale regenerative farming\, permaculture\, agroforestry\, silvopasture\, agritourism\, farm-based education\, etc\, but lack the resources to do it on your own? \n\n\nIf you answered “yes” to any of these questions\, this event is for you!!\n\n\n \n\n\nSo\, let’s get this discussion going. Let’s make connections and build a regional network. Let’s build a movement of solidarity and mutual aid among existing (and aspiring) farm-based communities across the Northeast. There will be a table for you to display information about your project or venture\, as well as regional breakout sessions to connect w/ people from your region.\n\n\n \n\n\nLunch will be potluck style. Please bring a dish. There will be no kitchen access\, so please bring any plates/bowls/cups/utensils that you will want to use. Lodging for the night is available by contacting Sirius directly. Questions/comments/RSVP can be send to farmingincommunity@gmail.com. Donations of $10-$20 welcome to cover event costs. Please contact us if you feel inspired to volunteer the day of the event. SUMMARY:Workshop: Soil Evaluation & Amendment
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a crash course in understanding soil\, your garden’s lifeblood. We will discuss the basic components & characteristics of soil\, and how to identify them in your garden. Bring a soil sample\, and everyone will have the opportunity to evaluate your soil to discover its material & macronutrientcomposition (we will briefly discuss micronutrients\, but in this class we will focus on and test for Nitrogen\, Potassium and Phosphorus). We will then troubleshoot your results to determine the next steps towards improving your soil.\nPlease bring a soil sample of about 2 cups. To collect a soil sample\, dig at least 5 holes (6-8″ deep) staggered throughout the area to be tested. From each hole\, take a vertical slice of soil from the side of the hole. Combine all samples and mix thoroughly. Ideally\, samples should be dried. To dry soil sample\, place on a baking sheet in full sun or in an oven on the lowest setting until dusty. \nAdmission to this workshop is $35. For more information and to register visit The Haberdashery website. \nTaught by Melody Figge of The Haberdashery

SUMMARY:Kestrel Land Trust April Outings: Exploring Vernal Pools
DESCRIPTION:Spring seems to be coming early this year: The warm\, wet nights have gotten the frogs and salmanders moving on their way to the vernal pools for their annual breeding season. On Saturday\,April 9\, from 1 pm to 3 pm\, we’re pleased to again have educator Brandon Abbott show us the mysteries of the vernal pool in Northampton. A great family event\, Brandon will bring equipment for gathering and inspecting fairy shrimp\, frog eggs\, and other creatures up close! \n\nIf you can’t make that outing\, you’ll have a second chance. On April 23 from 1 pm to 3 pm\, come learn about the next phase when we visit vernal pools in Hadley to look for tadpoles and salamander larvae. UMass Environmental Conservatio Professor Scott Jackson specializes in amphibians and vernals pools\, and will be our guide to the later phase of the vernal pool season. \nEach outing is limited to 20 participants: RSVP required to learn meeting locations. Email office@kestreltrust.org. \nThis even is open to the public: Just sign up so we know you’re coming! SUMMARY:Farming the Fringe: Practical Horticulture for Foodies\, Activists and Lonely Hearts..
DESCRIPTION:This is a basic workshop designed for folks with little or no permaculture experience\, however all are welcome…\n\n \n\n\nThis is a basic skills workshop for folks who recognize the importance of augmenting our food supply with high-quality\, home-grown fruits\, nuts\, veggies and herbs from “backyard” plots\, rooftop gardens\, passive solar greenhouses\, or other non-traditional spaces available in a variety of “real-life” conditions. \n\nInspired by “permaculture” principles\, dumpster diving\, as well as the “guerrilla gardening” movement\, farmer Dan will review and demonstrate a variety of low-tech\, organic growing practices\, including natural soil building and manure-based composting\, “low-till” bed management using perennial sheet mulch (for soil protection and weed control)\, seed saving\, “season extension”\, as well as several other practical tips\, tools and shortcuts to successfully propagate and share healthy seedlings\, plants and ongoing fresh harvests\, in marginal spaces\, without machinery\, capital or fossil fuel…\n\nThis class begins with a brisk lecture/discussion followed by a farm/greenhouse tour\, a pipe bending demo (making low tunnel “hoops”)\, and an informal Q and A session over home made soup and bread… (Suggested donation: $25-$35). No one turned away. Space limited\, please RSVP. More info/directions @ 413-863-8696 or on facebook…\n\n\n \n\n\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/223919931300377/\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Earth Day Potluck and Seed Swap
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Earth Day\, come join us for an evening of sharing food and swapping seeds and plants! If you don’t have anything to swap\, that’s fine too. Come for the potluck and company! \n\nWe will also have a sign up sheet for anyone interested in sharing a skill at future skill share meet ups.\n\n\n \n\n\nWHAT TO BRING:\n\n Please bring a simple dish\, drink\, or snack to share potluck style. Eating utensils and plates will be provided.\nBring one more more items to swap. (If you plan to swap)\n\nSome item ideas: seeds (store bought or harvested)\, cuttings\, seedlings/starts\, seed potatoes\, succulents\, house plants\, etc. Other garden items are welcome too \nHOW IT WORKS: \n\nFor this swap you can trade an item your brought for another item that someone else brought: items are swapped 1-for-1.\nEach swapper sets what 1 item is: 1 pack of seeds\, 5 seed potatoes\, 1 bundle of cuttings\, 3 seedlings\, etc.\nNo haggling please. We want this to be a fair and friendly swap for all! Please avoid thinking of swapped items in terms of monitory value. Instead the items swapped should be something you and your swapping partner value for what it is rather than how much it’s worth in dollars.\nEveryone gets a name tag so we can meet each other and also know who made what. \nLabels will be provided for you to label your item with:\n1. The name of the item(s) you are swapping.\n2. The name of the person who made the item (you).\n3. Notes regarding the item (planting instructions\, etc).\n\nEach item label will also have a section for “bids”.\nWhen the swap begins\, everyone will place their item bids. You may place 3 bids per item you’ve brought to swap.\n When the bids are all in\, it’s time to swap! Chat with each other. Ask if the maker of the item you’ve bid on is interested in swapping for the item you’ve brought. Be polite and have fun!\n This will probably end up going freestyle\, but these rules are a good guide to start\, making sure everyone has a good time\, meets some new folks\, and maybe learns something new.\n\nPLEASE NOTE: The ‘bid cards’ are only a starting place\, you do not have to swap with people on your cards or ones you’ve signed up for- Please make sure each swap it done FACE TO FACE with the other person agreeing to the swap!\n\n Most important of all: Have fun!!\n\nYou can RSVP here: https://www.facebook.com/events/1673622526245181/
