The farm’s rich sandy loam has been growing fruit and vegetable crops for centuries and as a changing climate brings changing precipitation patterns to New England\, Warner Farm is poised to respond effectively in times of drought.  \nJoin CISA\, UMass Extension\, and Dave Wissemann of Warner Farm on July 13th at 4:00pm for an up close look at how they are optimizing their water resources and water distribution systems to ensure the sustainable production of crops throughout the season and in the face of increasingly uncertain growing conditions. DESCRIPTION:Join Crimson Clover Farm and American Farmland Trust for a field walk exploring innovative approaches to tillage reduction on organic farms. Farmer Nathan Frigard will showcase three tillage reduction and soil health trials: zone-tilling and planting crops into established dutch white clover living mulch\, growing teff as a living mulch between tomato beds\, and the use of intensive cover crop successions for organic matter/residue building. Nathan will provide a farm tour\, stopping at each trial plot to discuss the operations involved and any initial soil health\, weed suppression\, and crop performance observations. Join CISA\, UMass Extension\, Berkshire Conservation District\, Hampden-Hampshire Conservation District\, and Sawyer Farm’s Lincoln Fishman for a close look at transplanter shoe adaptations designed to reduce soil disturbance and weed competition in perennial clover and cash crop production. \nThis in-person workshop will be followed with an on-farm networking opportunity and equipment demo. Berkshire Conservation District will display their no-till drill seeder\, which is available for rentals and can be used for mixed or single species applications from clovers and orchard grass to rye and soybeans\, and the Hampden-Hampshire Conservation District will display their ESCH 5605 seed drill. DESCRIPTION:Dates: Tuesdays\, August 8 & 15 \nTime:   Noon-1 pm Eastern \nLearn more and register. \nIdentify your communication and management preferences and practical ways to use them to build and retain a successful and productive crew. In this two-part workshop\, we will use the DiSC Workplace Profile to help you identify your unique communication and management preferences and explore ways that your preferences affect your strengths and stressors related to managing labor. The DiSC model provides a common language people can use to better understand themselves and those they interact with. We can use this knowledge to reduce conflict and improve working relationships. \nPrior to the first session\, participants will complete the online DiSC Workplace profile and receive their personalized report. In the first session (August 8)\, we will review our profiles and explore what they can tell us about the opportunities and challenges each of us brings to workplace interactions. In the second session (August 15). we will discuss strategies farm operators and managers can use to better communicate with\, manage and supervise employees who may or may not share our work style preferences. Both sessions will include discussion of practical ways you can use to build and sustain a successful crew. \nFee: $35. There is a $35 participant fee for this workshop to help pay for the DiSC Workplace Profile. The Farm Labor Dashboard project is subsidizing the balance (approximately 60%) of the actual profile cost. After you register\, we will send information about how to pay and complete enrollment in the workshop.  Because participants need to complete a self-assessment prior to the workshop\, registration for each section of the workshop will close three business days before the first session on Thursday August 3.

The panel brings together two local farmers\, David Fisher of Natural Roots Farm in Conway and Sarah Voiland of Red Fire Farm in Montague and Granby\, with Natalie Blais\, State Representative for 1st Franklin District. Following the panel\, join in the action planning session to share ideas of what we can do\, next steps to take\, and how each of us can contribute. \nThere is no charge for the event. The farm offers year-round CSA shares with 200 members and a farm store. In the July flooding the farm lost its main fields with damage to farm roads and River crossings. They have been able to continue operations with community support from a GoFundMe campaign and support from local farms.\nSarah Voiland\, her husband\, family and crew operate Red Fire Farm with fields near the Sawmill and Connecticut Rivers. The farm offers year-round CSA shares with 1\,200 members and a farm store. The excessive rainfall damaged crops in the fields and washed away plants in some fields\, but the farm was not flooded by the Rivers. Like other farms the full extent of damage from the summer’s rainfall is still in play because excessive rain causes fungal diseases in plants and may affect crops still in the ground.\nNatalie Blais\, State Representative for 1st Franklin District\, has served the District since 2019. She serves on the Joint Committee on Agriculture and has visited local farms affected by the July flooding. In August the Legislature provided $20 million in mitigation funds for natural disasters including flooding in western Massachusetts.\n\nThis is the first event in the 2023-2024 Environmental Sunday program organized by the Church’s Green Team. DESCRIPTION:RSVP here! \nJoin us at Wheel-View Farm for an open house and barbecue meal on the farm! The event will celebrate Wheel-View and their recent honor\, becoming recipient of the 2022 Leopold Conservation Award for New England. Come see how your beef is grown\, take a tour of the farm store and museum\, and take a tractor-drawn wagon ride to the top of the hill\, overlooking a view across four states! The event will include conversation with Ridge Shinn & Lynne Pledger\, authors of Grass-Fed Beef for a Post-Pandemic World. Speakers will be available for book-signing and questions throughout the day. \nThere will also be an optional barbecue meal served at the farm\, available for $30 per person. The meal will feature Wheel-View Farm grass-fed beef and pastured pork! SUMMARY:Avoid Compaction: Plant Garlic Into Your Cover Crop!
DESCRIPTION:Register here! \nAre you looking to optimize your on-farm cover cropping systems and identify opportunities to decrease the compaction of your soil?  Planting garlic or a variety of other foods into your cover crop is a great way to optimize your fields\, decrease the compaction levels of your soil\, and increase the nutrient availability. \nDuring this event\, Chuck Currie of Freedom Food Farm will walk us through this process\, and demonstrate how to minimize compaction\, which is often propelled by tillage and frequent tractor passes.  We’ll tour their fields and get a look at the variety of equipment they use to enhance their no-till farming practices\, such as: a water wheel transplanter with a no-till coulter\, a no-till drill to plant cover crop\, and mulch transferring equipment. \nLearn about and discuss which methods may work best for your farm\, and identify opportunities for improving your own systems for healthier soil and increased productivity– right before we get ready to plant our garlic! \nEvent Details:\n\nDate:  September 24\, 1:00-4:00pm\nLocation: Freedom Food Farm\, 471 Leonard Street\, Raynham\, MA 02767 United States\nPrice: Sliding scale $30/$50/$70 (Full Scholarships available: Apply here)\n\nQuestions?
