SUMMARY:NRCS Webinar for Forest Landowners
DESCRIPTION:Register here!  \nDo you have forest land? Have you been managing it? Would you like to get paid to continue that good work and implement one new activity? Or are you new to forest management? Wherever you are in your forestland journey\, you will want to read this! \nThe U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and the MA Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) are co-sponsoring an online informational meeting on Monday February 5\, 2024 at 6pm for the forest land community on funding opportunities through the Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) and DCR’s Stewardship Program. \nCSP helps agricultural producers\, including non-industrial private forest landowners take the conservation activities on their operations to the next level though a five-year contract. It provides a payment (minimum $4000/year) for maintaining the current conservation efforts on the land and for implementing new conservation activities. At least one new activity is required to participate in the program. \nJoin us at the meeting to hear from a MA forest landowner about his experience in receiving a recent CSP contract. NRCS will explain the eligibility requirements\, payment structure and available conservation activities. This is a timely meeting as MA has received additional funding for CSP\, and other programs\, through the Inflation Reduction Act – the largest climate and conservation investment in history. Learning more and contacting your local NRCS office is the first step to applying for CSP or other programs for future funding. \nPresenters: Alison Wright-Hunter and Michael Downey from DCR will provide updates on the Massachusetts Forest Stewardship Program (FSP) and other opportunities from the DCR’s Working Forest Initiative. \nPlease register by Friday\, February 2\, 2024. If you have any questions\, you may contact Kate Parsons\, Resource Conservationist\, NRCS at kate.parsons@usda.gov or 413-253-4380. If you require special accommodation in order to participate fully in this online meeting\, please contact Kate by Monday\, January 29\, 2024.

SUMMARY:Navigating Risk: A Workshop on Sensitivity and Competitive Analysis for Agricultural Producers
DESCRIPTION:Register here! \nJoin us for a dynamic 2-hour workshop designed to share with farmers about assessing and mitigating risks using analytical tools. Our focus will be on two key aspects: Sensitivity Analysis and Competitive Analysis. Learn more here! \n\nSensitivity analysis is a way to see what a range of potential financial outcomes for the year may be. It can help producers prepare for a range of potentials and how they might respond to them. In this workshop we will learn about the process of sensitivity analysis and discuss how it builds resilience and adaptability for a farm business.\nCompetitive Analysis is a tool used to assess the market and where a farm is within it as part of a larger pricing structure. It includes discussions of factors that are part of determining the right price for an item\, as well as who are direct and indirect competitors and how to consider them and their pricing.\n\n\n\nDate: Tuesday\, February 6\, 2024\, 6-8pm\nLocation: Remote\n\n\nDon’t miss this opportunity to enhance your strategic decision-making skills and elevate your competitive edge in the agricultural sector! \n\nAbout the Presenter: \nCian Dalzell has been farming since 2007\, growing both the soil and financial records and systems at Three Maples Market Garden since 2010. In addition to growing vegetables in Berkshire County\, he has a decade of working in natural foods retail and nearly a decade of providing business technical assistance. Cian came to the Carrot Project for a workshop on financial recordkeeping and is now the lead trainer and a business advisor with the organization. His areas of expertise include financial analysis and planning\, competitive analysis\, business planning\, and building operational systems.

SUMMARY:USDA Investments in Conservation and Climate-Resilience in New England: Assessing the impact and advocating for the future
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, February 9 | 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM EST | Register Here! \nIn partnership with the Northeast Healthy Soil Network\, Food Solutions New England is hosting the following policy solutions webinar as part of the FSNE Campaign for Climate Resilience. \nA year following substantial investments by the Biden-Harris Administration in the USDA\, coupled with the passage of the Growing Climate Solutions Act in December 2022\, the USDA is making strategic investments to de-risk the transition to climate-smart agriculture for corporations and remove barriers to market-driven solutions such as carbon-markets. \nThis webinar will explore the trajectory and impact of USDA investments in Conservation and Climate-Smart programs on climate resilience and farm viability in New England. The exploration aims to discern whether these investments are propelling the region toward a transformative shift in the food system or merely fortifying existing models and systems.

SUMMARY:Free School 4 Farm Workers: Contracts and Negotiating 101
DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate the kick-off of Free School 4 Farm Workers by joining us for this two-part online workshop where we take a deep dive into farm employment contracts and negotiation skills. Click here for more information.  \nWe will explore what qualifies as an employment contract and what purpose these documents can play on the farm. We’ll consider common techniques you can use when negotiating – whether as part of a formal contract or for other benefits like a pay raise or a new title. We will learn to assess when it is appropriate and safe to negotiate\, consider both collective and individual action\, and discuss how to prepare for and recover from what may be an emotionally charged experience. \nWe will be joined by experts in agricultural labor standards\, employment law\, worker-led organizing\, and coping and deescalation strategies. All sessions will also include farm workers sharing about their experiences and lesson learned relating to contracts and negotiations. Expertise spans both the U.S. and Canadian contexts.  \nDates: February 13th\, 7pm and February 20th 7pm  \nThese sessions are for farm workers only. \nSessions will be recorded and shared with all registrants. \nSimultaneous language interpretation into both French and Spanish is available upon request. \nMORE INFO AND REGISTRATION \nAbout Free School:\nFree School 4 Farm Workers is an international\, community-driven experiment in popular education by and for farm workers. SUMMARY:A Call to Fierce Love and Civility in Food Systems and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Political polarization and culture wars seem to dominate the headlines these days. While there are questions about how widespread this may actually be in food and other systems\, media (and social media) can drive behavior in such a way that people stop questioning their assumptions or engaging with others who have different views. This is where things can get dangerous – people lose the “middle ground” where they can actually meet\, negotiate and be collectively creative. In this session participants will interact with our special guests and one another to explore practices of “fierce love and civility” across differences and how these might help create the better world that is needed and possible. \nGuests include: \n\nAmri Johnson of Inclusion Wins\, DEI strategist and author of Reconstructing Inclusion\nJoe Weston of The Weston Network\, international trainer\, peace activist and author of Fierce Civility\n\nFree to attend but registration is required – https://fsne.info/fierce-love \nDate: February 16th\, 9am-1pm

SUMMARY:Marketing for Farmers
DESCRIPTION:Deeper than the soil we grow\, farmers have the opportunity to nourish our communities beyond calories with the stories we tell. Her passion\, curiosity\, love of food and love of people led her all over the world studying seed\, song and culture worth celebrating. In 2012\, she co-founded Fruition Seeds with her partner Matthew to share the seeds\, knowledge and inspiration gardeners crave to amplify our individual as well as collective abundance in our short seasons.  If she’s not farming she is singing\, skiing\, snuggling her dogs\, hunting mushrooms or learning something new. \nWhen and where: Wednesday\, February 21st from 10–11:30 AM on Zoom. \nRegister here to receive the Zoom link!

SUMMARY:Growing Organically Together: A BIPOC Networking Event / Cultivemos Orgánico Juntes: Un evento para crear redes entre agricultores BIPOC
DESCRIPTION:Vea esta pagina en español \nHave you been looking to dive deeper into the world of soil health\, and discuss what practices make the most sense for your farm? This event is a space for BIPOC farmers to explore connections with customers\, markets and soil health. Together\, we’ll be exploring our strengths\, needs and opportunities within our farms\, including discussions on the option of organic certification. We’ll develop a more clear understanding around the intersections of our financial investments\, love for farming and desire to serve our communities. \nThis event is a part of a series throughout Massachusetts of networking and technical assistance opportunities around organic farming\, specifically certifying organic. If you have questions or interests on if it’s right for your farm or about certification in general\, this is a great way to get involved. Come with questions and your thoughts.  We’ll be collecting them and addressing concerns at future technical assistance events. Click here for details.  \n\nDate: February 21st\, 5-8pm\nLocation: Hispanic-American Library\, 55 Frank B Murray St.\, Springfield\, MA \n\nREGISTER TODAY \n\nDuring this event\, we will: \n\nHave conversations around organic farming in our communities and what practices make sense for us\nExplore the conversations and questions around certifying organic\, including thoughts\, concerns\, opportunities and barriers\nEnjoy a delicious local meal\nLearn about the multiple opportunities and resources available for farmers\n\nAbout the Instructors: \nUlum Pixan Ahtohil Suk’il (Bird Spirit) (she/her).  Equity and Inclusion Director \nUlum Pixan (Original Name)\, aka Dania Flores (colonized/legal name)\, is an Indigenous mixed-race woman (Maya\, Xinca\, Garifuna\, Russian Jew and ladino)\, mother and grandmother. She was born in Guatemala\, Mesoamerica\, and moved to the United States in 1999. She has always been involved with community organizing around aboriginal\, women’s\, language\, and environmental issues. Ulum is a critical thinker\, farmer and activist. As NOFA/Mass’s Equity and Inclusion Director\,  and former Education Director\, she leads the equity efforts of the organization\, promoting our anti- racist principles and commitment to dismantling oppressive systems that keep our communities hungry and poor. \nLanguages : English/Español \nAbout the Project: \nThis event was made possible by the Transition to Organic Partnership Program (TOPP)\, a national program that helps farmers navigate the ins and outs of certification\, and provides mentorships and technical assistance to those who are considering organic certification. \nThere is a history of BIPOC farmers not receiving or having unequal access to the resources that are provided by government agencies. This event is a safe space for us to discuss those inequities\, look at how they apply to our farmers and communities\, and consider how we may interact with them going forward. It is important to NOFA/Mass that we prioritize and deeply consider the gifts\, needs and concerns of our BIPOC farmers. \nThis event is for BIPOC farmers. White allies are encouraged to attend other events\, join Caucus groups at our conferences\, or make a donation to racial equity programming. Thank you. \nRefund/Inclement Weather Policy: \nThis is a free event and will be rescheduled if needed. SUMMARY:A Call to Right Relations and Climate Resilience in Food Systems and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Many in the New England region and beyond continue to reckon with the tragic history of what has been done to Indigenous peoples through the process of colonization and economic greed. Amidst genocide and cultural devastation\, many tribes have been remarkably resilient and continue to hold on to their traditional teachings to guide them through unspeakable atrocities. With the #LandBack movement gaining momentum and growing support for tribal food sovereignty\, FSNE recognizes that there is much to learn from Indigenous neighbors and partners\, especially when it comes to being in “right relationship” with the planet and one another. During this session\, FSNE is honored to welcome two Indigenous guests who have generously agreed to share how one might honor the spirit of longstanding treaties and respectfully engage with “all our kin.” \nGuests include: \n\nGae Ho Hwako Norma Jacobs\, elder of the Wolf Clan of the Cayuga Nation\, Longhouse Faithkeeper and author of Odagahodhes\nErica Wood\, Alaskan Native Iñupiaq plant ecologist and environmental/food justice advocate\n\nFree to attend but registration required – https://fsne.info/right-relations \nDate: February 23rd\, 9am – 1pm
