SUMMARY:A Call to Fierce Love and Civility in Food Systems and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Political polarization and culture wars seem to dominate the headlines these days. While there are questions about how widespread this may actually be in food and other systems\, media (and social media) can drive behavior in such a way that people stop questioning their assumptions or engaging with others who have different views. This is where things can get dangerous – people lose the “middle ground” where they can actually meet\, negotiate and be collectively creative. In this session participants will interact with our special guests and one another to explore practices of “fierce love and civility” across differences and how these might help create the better world that is needed and possible. \nGuests include: \n\nAmri Johnson of Inclusion Wins\, DEI strategist and author of Reconstructing Inclusion\nJoe Weston of The Weston Network\, international trainer\, peace activist and author of Fierce Civility\n\nFree to attend but registration is required – https://fsne.info/fierce-love \nDate: February 16th\, 9am-1pm

SUMMARY:Marketing for Farmers
DESCRIPTION:Deeper than the soil we grow\, farmers have the opportunity to nourish our communities beyond calories with the stories we tell. Beyond traditional ‘marketing\,’ together we’ll explore simple tools and strategies to bring energy\, authenticity and ease to the stories we share and change we’re hungry to make. \nPresenter\, Petra Page-Mann of Fruition Seeds: Growing up in her father’s garden in the Finger Lakes of New York\, Petra believes each seed and each of us is in the world to change the world. Her passion\, curiosity\, love of food and love of people led her all over the world studying seed\, song and culture worth celebrating. In 2012\, she co-founded Fruition Seeds with her partner Matthew to share the seeds\, knowledge and inspiration gardeners crave to amplify our individual as well as collective abundance in our short seasons.  If she’s not farming she is singing\, skiing\, snuggling her dogs\, hunting mushrooms or learning something new. \nWhen and where: Wednesday\, February 21st from 10–11:30 AM on Zoom. \nRegister here to receive the Zoom link!

SUMMARY:Growing Organically Together: A BIPOC Networking Event / Cultivemos Orgánico Juntes: Un evento para crear redes entre agricultores BIPOC
DESCRIPTION:Vea esta pagina en español \nHave you been looking to dive deeper into the world of soil health\, and discuss what practices make the most sense for your farm? This event is a space for BIPOC farmers to explore connections with customers\, markets and soil health. Together\, we’ll be exploring our strengths\, needs and opportunities within our farms\, including discussions on the option of organic certification. We’ll develop a more clear understanding around the intersections of our financial investments\, love for farming and desire to serve our communities. \nThis event is a part of a series throughout Massachusetts of networking and technical assistance opportunities around organic farming\, specifically certifying organic. If you have questions or interests on if it’s right for your farm or about certification in general\, this is a great way to get involved. Come with questions and your thoughts.  We’ll be collecting them and addressing concerns at future technical assistance events. Click here for details.  \n\nDate: February 21st\, 5-8pm\nLocation: Hispanic-American Library\, 55 Frank B Murray St.\, Springfield\, MA \n\nREGISTER TODAY \n\nDuring this event\, we will: \n\nHave conversations around organic farming in our communities and what practices make sense for us\nExplore the conversations and questions around certifying organic\, including thoughts\, concerns\, opportunities and barriers\nEnjoy a delicious local meal\nLearn about the multiple opportunities and resources available for farmers\n\nAbout the Instructors: \nUlum Pixan Ahtohil Suk’il (Bird Spirit) (she/her).  Equity and Inclusion Director \nUlum Pixan (Original Name)\, aka Dania Flores (colonized/legal name)\, is an Indigenous mixed-race woman (Maya\, Xinca\, Garifuna\, Russian Jew and ladino)\, mother and grandmother. She was born in Guatemala\, Mesoamerica\, and moved to the United States in 1999. She has always been involved with community organizing around aboriginal\, women’s\, language\, and environmental issues. Ulum is a critical thinker\, farmer and activist. As NOFA/Mass’s Equity and Inclusion Director\,  and former Education Director\, she leads the equity efforts of the organization\, promoting our anti- racist principles and commitment to dismantling oppressive systems that keep our communities hungry and poor. \nLanguages : English/Español \nAbout the Project: \nThis event was made possible by the Transition to Organic Partnership Program (TOPP)\, a national program that helps farmers navigate the ins and outs of certification\, and provides mentorships and technical assistance to those who are considering organic certification. \nThere is a history of BIPOC farmers not receiving or having unequal access to the resources that are provided by government agencies. This event is a safe space for us to discuss those inequities\, look at how they apply to our farmers and communities\, and consider how we may interact with them going forward. It is important to NOFA/Mass that we prioritize and deeply consider the gifts\, needs and concerns of our BIPOC farmers. \nThis event is for BIPOC farmers. White allies are encouraged to attend other events\, join Caucus groups at our conferences\, or make a donation to racial equity programming. Thank you. \nRefund/Inclement Weather Policy: \nThis is a free event and will be rescheduled if needed. For information on our refund and inclement weather policy\, click here. \nCapacity: \nSpace is limited! Register by 2/16\, after that\, email events@nofamass.org to get on the wait list. SUMMARY:A Call to Right Relations and Climate Resilience in Food Systems and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Many in the New England region and beyond continue to reckon with the tragic history of what has been done to Indigenous peoples through the process of colonization and economic greed. Amidst genocide and cultural devastation\, many tribes have been remarkably resilient and continue to hold on to their traditional teachings to guide them through unspeakable atrocities. With the #LandBack movement gaining momentum and growing support for tribal food sovereignty\, FSNE recognizes that there is much to learn from Indigenous neighbors and partners\, especially when it comes to being in “right relationship” with the planet and one another. During this session\, FSNE is honored to welcome two Indigenous guests who have generously agreed to share how one might honor the spirit of longstanding treaties and respectfully engage with “all our kin.” \nGuests include: \n\nGae Ho Hwako Norma Jacobs\, elder of the Wolf Clan of the Cayuga Nation\, Longhouse Faithkeeper and author of Odagahodhes\nErica Wood\, Alaskan Native Iñupiaq plant ecologist and environmental/food justice advocate\n\nFree to attend but registration required – https://fsne.info/right-relations \nDate: February 23rd\, 9am – 1pm

SUMMARY:Approaching Nutrient Management in a Changing Climate
DESCRIPTION:Thursday March 14th\, 5:00-6:30 PM \nDynamic weather patterns brought about by a changing climate pose new challenges to producers throughout the Northeast. Among them is the question of how to appropriately manage nutrient availability in response to increased weather volatility. In this forum focused primarily on vegetable and berry farms\, Becky Maden will discuss how to proactively approach nutrient management decision making leading up to and throughout a season. With a focus on understanding the ways in which extreme weather patterns impact farm fertility\, we will explore how to apply farm management strategies to better build resilience into crop production systems. After her presentation\, participants will engage in a facilitated discussion\, sharing their experiences\, successes\, and challenges in adjusting nutrient management approaches in response to climate change. Come to listen\, share your experiences\, ask questions\, troubleshoot\, and be inspired about new systems that may make your own farm more climate resilient. \nFind more information and to register click here.
