SUMMARY:Discovering Resilience: A legal workshop for farmers and ranchers
DESCRIPTION:Discovering Resilience: A legal workshop for farmers and ranchers (Held Online) \nFarmers and ranchers: Do legal questions keep you up at night? Do you wish you knew where to turn for the answers? Those answers aren’t always easy to come by — especially for the most innovative\, direct-to-consumer farmers. \nDiscovering Resilience is a legal workshop designed just for you. The workshop empowers farmers and ranchers with the legal knowledge and skills they need to resolve legal vulnerability in 5 core areas of farm law: business structures\, insurance\, employment law\, land leasing and purchasing\, and diversification (value-added and agritourism). \nThis isn’t a boring\, powerpoint-driven impractical legal class. This is the most hands-on farm law workshop you’ll find. You’ll create your own farm law action plan\, unique to your operation\, with support from peers and legal experts along the way. SUMMARY:Equity\, Racism\, and Inclusiveness: Examining Farmers’ Markets
DESCRIPTION:Join Liz Wills-O’Gilvie\, director of the Springfield Food Policy Council and board chair of Gardening the Community\, and Neftali Durán\, co-founder of the I-Collective and the Holyoke Food and Equity Collective\, as they discuss how equity and racism intersect at farmers’ markets and how markets can be more welcoming and inclusive. SUMMARY:Local Wood: Grow\, Build\, Live Webinar Series ... Forest to Cities
DESCRIPTION:Local Wood: Grow\, Build\, Live Webinar Series \nMassachusetts Woodlands Institute*\, Northern Woodlands\, and New England Forestry Foundation present the Local Wood: Grow\, Build\, Live webinar series. Join us as we explore examples of how to grow\, build\, and live with beautiful and sustainable local wood products at different scales—from furniture to homes to institutional buildings. \n\nMarch 17th\, 2pm-3:30:  Forests to Cities\n\n*The Massachusetts Woodlands Institute is a subsidiary of Franklin Land Trust \nForest to Cities: \nJoin us on March 17th from 2pm-3:30pm to learn how engineered wood products\, also known as mass timber\, allow us to build bigger with wood\, as an alternative to carbon-intensive concrete and steel construction. We will highlight a flagship mass timber building in Massachusetts—the John W. Olver Design Building at UMass Amherst. With Dr. Peggi Clouston (Professor of Wood Mechanics and Timber Engineering in the Building and Construction Technology program) as our featured speaker\, we will hear about the innovative design and construction of the building\, how it functions as a space of education and inspiration for the next generation of builders\, and new research on the types of local tree species that can be used for mass timber. Together with New England Forestry Foundation COO Frank Lowenstein\, we will then turn to where the raw material for mass timber is typically sourced and the potential for big climate change mitigation benefits when it is generated from Exemplary Forestry practices that are designed to store more carbon in the woods\, while continuing to produce renewable wood products. \nRegistration Link: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_jHLUXw3eRmOg3xBha4pIzA

SUMMARY:Profitable Meat Pricing
DESCRIPTION:You are raising and selling local meat\, but are you making a profit doing so? Matt LeRoux will walk participants through the recently updated Cornell Meat Pricing Tool and the supporting marketing techniques needed to command prices that deliver a profit in every channel. For those familiar with the Meat Pricing Calculator\, this workshop will provide more hands-on training than in previous years. \nMatt LeRoux\, Ag. Marketing Consultant\, has nearly 20 years of experience serving farms through Cornell Cooperative Extension\, non-profits\, and consulting. Specializing in market strategy\, Matt works with a diverse mix of produce and livestock farmers and food businesses. Career highlights include developing the Marketing Channel Assessment Tool for produce growers and the Cornell Meat Price & Yield Calculator. \nIMPORTANT:\nTo participate\, farms will need to gather some simple data from the next animal(s) they take to the processor (see below) and know their cost of production. If help is needed to determine CoP\, farmers should consider attending the workshop Basic Farm Financials for Successful Pricing. \nData needed to participate: \n\nCarcass weight and all sellable cut weights from one or more “typical” animals. Getting cut weights from one animal (or one group) usually means weighing the cuts out when you get the meat back home. Some processors can provide this data to you\, but the old “kitchen counter” scale method is fairly easy too.\nKeep your processing invoice\, with carcass weight(s)\, slaughter fee\, cut and wrap fee\, and other fees from any additional processing (hot dogs\, patties\, sausage\, smoking\, etc..).\nHave a list of your current prices for cuts in the channel(s) you use.\n\nREGISTER HERE. \nPlease contact Stevie if you need assistance or have questions. \nSee here for more information about this workshop\, its associated workshop (Basic Farm Financials for Successful Pricing)\, and other CISA workshop offerings.

SUMMARY:Fruit Tree Grafting - a Virtual Workshop*
DESCRIPTION:Mass Aggie Seminars 2021\nMany people do not realize that all apple varieties are reproduced by grafting – they are not grown from seed. Other grafting techniques will be discussed.  Proper tools and sharpening will not be included. All workshop participants will graft several apple trees to take home!* \nRegister online for any of the Mass Aggie seminars by clicking here.  Some workshops have limited space so registering online is more likely to ensure enrollment. \nIf you do not wish to register online\, you may print a registration form to mail. Click mass_aggie_mail_in.pdf\, and you will open a pdf version of the registration form. You can print this form\, select the seminars that you wish to attend\, and mail it with a check for the appropriate amount. \n* This year plant materials will be delivered to participants so they can remotely participate in this hands on workshop.
