SUMMARY:Live Panel: Silvopasture in the Northeast
DESCRIPTION:Register here! \nSilvopasture (grazing livestock with trees) systems are complex\, dynamic and site specific. The practice is both rooted in indigenous land stewardship and its benefits are well documented by scientific literature. Adoption by farmers and land stewards of silvopasture is growing in interest. \nWith support from the USDA National Agroforestry Center (NAC)\, a collaboration of Regenerative Design Group\, Wellspring Forest Farm\, and Inhabit Films completed a project to highlight innovative examples of silvopasture systems in the Northeastern USA. \nThe project began with an inventory of self-identified silvopasture practitioners and resulted in nine case study videos of a wide range of farms utilizing pigs\, sheep\, goats\, cattle\, and poultry in their farming systems. \nVideos are released biweekly and can be viewed on the Farming with Trees YouTube channel and website. The final video will be released on March 1. \nOn March 22 from 12:30 – 2pm\, Wellspring Forest Farm will host a live panel discussion via ZOOM with four of the farmers where participants are invited to join and ask questions of the farmers. \nParticipating farms include: \n\nEric Shatt of RedByrd Orchard\, Trumansburg NY\nJohn Hopkins\, forester from Susquehanna Tree Care\, PA\nCharlize and Bru Katzenbach of Sweet Sourland Farm\, NJ\nLisa Reilich of Painted Pepper Farm\, ME\n\nAttendance is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Fundamentals of Organics: Greenhouse Production
DESCRIPTION:Join UMass Extension\, NOFA/Mass\, and Gideon Porth of Atlas Farm next Wednesday for the next workshop in our Fundamentals of Organics series. \nIn this session\, Gideon Porth\, the owner of Atlas Farm\, will share his experiences growing transplants with different systems as he has scaled up over the last 20 years\, troubleshooting issues common in certified organic seedling production such as potting mixes\, fertilizers\, and pest control. Currently the farm has a large seedling production greenhouse with automatic watering\, requiring a high degree of uniformity of the transplants trays to be successful. Over the years they have honed their greenhouse seeding techniques to include an automated tray filler\, vacuum seeders\, and a home-made vermiculite seed topping conveyor. With this system\, three workers can fill and seed up to 200 trays per hour. \nThis workshop is intended for commercial vegetable and small fruit growers. \nThis workshop is part of the Transition to Organic Partnership Program (TOPP).  To learn more about the UMass & NOFA/Mass programming\, check out the NOFA/Mass TOPP web page. To learn more about the national TOPP program\, visit www.organictransition.org. \nWhen: Wednesday\, March 27\, 10am-1pm\, lunch included!\nWhere: Atlas Farm\, 635 River Rd\, Deerfield\, MA\, 01342\nRegistration: Free! Please register in advance for food ordering purposes. Click here to register.

Rachel’s presentation will be followed by a facilitated farmer-to-farmer discussion. Come to listen\, share your experiences\, ask questions\, troubleshoot\, and be inspired about new systems that may make your own farm more climate resilient.  \nFind more information and to register click here.

SUMMARY:Climate Adaptive Gardening Series: Adaptations for your own garden
DESCRIPTION:April 28 @ 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm \nJoin climate scientist and community gardener Laura Hilberg of EcoAdapt to explore the realities of climate change in western Massachusetts and the impact on farmers and gardeners in our local landscape. \nClimate change is already affecting our community in the form of frequent\, severe flooding\, heat waves\, and unseasonably warm winters\, and these impacts are likely to become even more extreme over the coming decades. Although it is difficult to predict what will happen and challenging to cope with climate change on top of all of the existing stressors we are all dealing with\, there is a lot we can do to prepare for and respond to the changes that are happening – and hopefully build a better\, stronger community in the process! \nThis workshop will introduce community gardeners and other interested participants to climate change adaptation\, which focuses on how to cope with and respond to climate change. We will also outline the changes that we are most likely to experience in western Massachusetts and how they might impact our community garden\, and provide some resources for participants who are interested in exploring these topics in greater detail. Finally\, we will leave ample time for questions. We encourage you to ask questions in the registration form ahead of time\, so that we have the information to answer them at the workshop! \nFREE\, donations accepted  \nPlease register\, and submit questions here \n(Rain date: Sunday\, May 5)

SUMMARY:Spring field walk at Riverland Farm
DESCRIPTION:Let’s talk about interseeded clover as a way to maximize cover cropping on vegetable farms! \nJoin us — American Farmland Trust\, Emily Landeck of Riverland Farm\, Ash Loehr of Hurricane Flats\, and Lincoln Fishman of Sawyer Farm—  for a spring field walk. \nAs vegetable growers in New England\, short growing seasons and high land prices make it challenging to fit in cover crops. This is particularly a true for crops harvested late into the fall\, like brassicas.  Brussels sprouts from Riverland are locally famous\, and Emily has been having luck interseeding dutch white clover into recently established Brussels sprouts.  Let’s walk out and take a look at the results this spring! \nIf you have experience interseeding cover crops into late summer crops\, we hope you’ll join us for a good conversation to share both successes and failures. Or if you are curious to learn more about the technique\, come and learn! \n\nDate: April 29th\, 2024 from 3 to 5 pm\nAddress: Riverland Farm\, 211 River Rd\, Sunderland\, MA 01375\nParking: Please park along the road by the Riverland Farm sign\n\nPlease RSVP here: https://forms.office.com/r/xwPMg9yEkN \n\nEmily Landeck recently became Director of Farm Programs at Hampshire College Farm and operates Riverland Farm in Sunderland.  She has been working on adding cover crops to a tight vegetable rotation while producing beautiful organic vegetables for regional wholesale markets. \nLincoln Fishman and Ash Loehr will join us for the conversation.  Lincoln has been developing systems for reducing tillage by utilizing dutch white clover\, and recently co-founded Momentum Ag\, an organization dedicated to on-farm research to help farmers implement and optimize climate-smart innovations.  Ash has a lot of experience interseeding cover crops at Hurricane Flats in South Royalton\, VT where they grow organic vegetables\, culinary herbs\, and popcorn\, for sale at their farm store and local markets. \nQUESTIONS?  Contact Julie Fine at American Farmland Trust\, jfine@farmland.org\, 413-531-0425
