SUMMARY:Farmworker event: Delegation Skills on the Farm (virtual)
DESCRIPTION:https://events.humanitix.com/free-school-for-farmworkers-presents-delegation-skills-on-the-farm \nFarming is often compared to a marathon\, but what about a symphony? Hear us out – farm managers are pretty similar to symphony conductors in a lot of ways. A symphony conductor decides what set of songs are being played and in what order. They need to make sure all musicians know their roles and cues for starting and stopping\, who is taking the lead\, who is supporting. When everyone is clear and the team is strong\, it’s music to our ears\, and when there is miscommunication or the flow is off\, yikes.  \nThe same goes for farming. The setlist is the task list and the orchestra is the farm crew. Delegating a farm crew\, like conducting a symphony\, takes a lot of specific skills like foresight\, communication and observance. You are facilitating the work and ensuring that it’s happening in a harmonious way.  \nDelegating as a manager is crucial for any farm’s success\, not to mention crew satisfaction. It can feel really good to get through a task list as a team where everyone feels seen and heard and like their skills are being utilized. But delegation can be tricky – knowing how long a task will take\, making sure no one is stuck with the same monotonous job every time\, balancing the power dynamics of being the manager of the crew while also trying to keep your boss satisfied (always the buffer never the bride)\, building skills among the crew while also trying to be motivating. Delegation is the true unsung hero of a happy farm. \nJoin us at this upcoming Free School for Farmworkers session where we will focus on these skills! This session will be co-facilitated by seasoned farm managers Sarah Bell and Abby Benson. They’ll be sharing their delegation tips and talking through scenarios and situations they’ve navigated on farms. \nThis session is a skill share\, so please come with your own questions\, expertise\, and delegation situations to workshop together! \nTuesday\, October 21 at 4:00pm PT/7:00pm ET on zoom.  \nAccessibility information: This session will be facilitated in English and simultaneously interpreted  into Spanish by Cooperativa Brujúlas. Closed captioned will also be available. Co-hosted by Not Our Farm\, UW-Extension\, and FairShare CSA Coalition. \nFlyer designed by Alicia Robinson-Welsh\nPlease note that Free School for Farmworkers sessions are a farmworker-only space.\n* We define a farmworker as someone working on a farm they do not own\, for or without pay\, including interns\, apprentices\, cooperative workers and aspiring farmworkers. If you have questions about whether you are eligible to participate\, please contact Anita Adalja at anita@notourfarm.org. \nFree School for Farmworkers strives to create pockets of opportunity to skill share\, connect and learn about parts of agriculture that can be overlooked\, forgotten or hoarded due to the nature of working on farms under capitalism. \nCo-facilitacion junto con Not Our Farm\, UW-Extension y FairShare CSA Coalition. \nThe University of Wisconsin–Madison Division of Extension provides equal opportunities in employment and programming in compliance with state and federal law. \nThis event will be conducted in English. You may request an interpreter\, materials in an alternative language or format\, or other services to make this event more accessible. Contact Sarah Janes Ugoretz at sarah.janesugoretz@wisc.edu or 6008-234-1561 by Tuesday October 7th. There is no added cost to you for these services.

SUMMARY:Agroforestry Crawl: Three farms in one day!
DESCRIPTION:Register here! \nJoin CISA on Friday\, September 26th for an all-day Agroforestry Crawl visiting three innovative western MA farms with agroforestry systems on their land. \nWe start out at The Long Game Orchard in Northfield\, a 6-acre silvopasture farm with tree crops including chestnuts\, American persimmons\, Asian pears\, Yellowbud hickory\, and pawpaws. The farm is also experimenting with fodder and biodiversity hedges and is transforming an adjacent secondary forest fragment into a silvopasture system. From there we travel to Firefly Farm in Sunderland\, a 25-acre no-till farm with perennial herbs\, a no-till veggie area and orchards of heartnuts\, hazelnuts and chestnuts. Finally\, we hit Carr’s Ciderhouse and Preservation Orchard in Hadley for a look at their apple orchards that are integrated with grazing flocks of sheep and chickens based on the farm and raised in collaboration with Meadowfed Lamb.  \nVisits to each farm include farm tours and conversations with the farmers and participants. Following the tour of Carr’s\, we will have some time to reflect on opportunities and challenges associated with implementing agroforestry systems on western MA farms and a networking session over pizza and cider.  \nThis event is oriented toward farmers and service providers\, but is open to members of the public interested in learning about agroforestry. \nDate: Friday\, September 26th\, 9:30am – 6pm (rain date Sept 27th) \nFarm Tour Locations:  \n\nThe Long Game Orchard\, Northfield\nFirefly Farm\, Sunderland\nPreservation Orchard\, Meadowfed Lamb and Carr’s Ciderhouse\, Hadley\n\nAgenda:  \n9:30am – Meet up at The Long Game Orchard \n10:00am – Begin farm tour   \n11:30am – BYO lunch break at The Long Game Orchard or elsewhere  \n1:00pm – Meet up at Firefly Farm\, begin farm tour   \n2:30pm – Depart for Preservation Orchard & Carr’s Ciderhouse/Meadowfed Lamb   \n3:00pm – Begin farm tour  \n4:00pm – Discussion on moving agroforestry systems forward – constraints and opportunities  \n5:00pm – Networking/cider/pizza at Carr’s \n6:00pm – End of event \nRegistration: Please register in advance. Although we encourage participants to attend all three farm tours\, you may select one or two tours to attend if you’re not able to commit to the full day. \nFood: CISA will provide some snacks but otherwise food will not be provided on the tour. Please bring your own lunch or plan to go out in between tours. Pizza and cider will be available to purchase at Carr’s Ciderhouse during the networking session at the end of the tour. \nTransportation: Please arrange your own transportation between tour locations. SUMMARY:Farming in a Changing Environment
DESCRIPTION:Register here! \nIn Northwest Connecticut\, the changing climate isn’t an abstract debate; it’s in the fields\, the greenhouses\, and the creeks that run through them. Farmers here are adjusting planting schedules\, managing unpredictable rainfall\, and finding new ways to protect soil and water. These adaptations are as much about survival as they are about stewardship. \nOn Wednesday\, September 24\, the public will have a chance to hear directly from the people on the front lines of these shifts. Berkshire Agricultural Ventures will present its third annual climate-focused forum\, hosted this year by The Farmer’s Table and the Northwest Connecticut Land Conservancy at De Hoek Farm in New Milford. After a farm tour will be remarks on statewide perspective on climate and agriculture from Commissioner Bryan Hurlburt\, followed by a moderated farmer panel. See the event registration page for more details! \n\nDate: September 24th\, 4-7:30pm\nLocation: De Hoek Farm\, 32 Hine Road\, New Milford\, CT 06776\n\nContact Ben at Berkshire Ag Ventures with questions. \nThis event is part of Climate Change and Farming Week 2025. SUMMARY:NOFA-MA: Intuitive Approaches to Agroforestry
DESCRIPTION:Planting and designing an agroforestry-based farm is both a science and an art. It’s easy to get stuck in your head when approaching a site\, and mulling over choices\, such as whether to leave a section of land for pollinators\, or how to select the most suitable trees for sun exposure and soil type.  Whether you’re a farmer who has dreams of productive and diversified plantings\, or a designer who wants to meet their clients’ needs while retaining ecological integrity\, this workshop is designed for you. Practice tapping into the intuitive side of establishing a landscape\, connecting with not only the history and logical design elements\, but the spirit and restoration of the land. \nFor more information and to register: https://www.nofamass.org/event/intuitive-approaches-to-agroforestry/
