SUMMARY:Exploring Novel Approaches to Farm Labor
DESCRIPTION:Do you struggle to find labor for your farm?  You are not alone!  Join us during National Farmworker Awareness Week for an informative workshop to learn about results of a 3-year Northeast SARE research project to assess collaborative\, multi-farm strategies to help our agricultural community solve labor challenges. National Farmworker Awareness Week (March 26 – April 2\, 2022) is a week of action for communities and individuals to bring attention to farmworkers and honor them for the contributions they make to our daily lives. \nRegister Here \nNew Entry Sustainable Farming Project\, Farm Commons\, and Land-Grant Extension programs in NY (Cornell)\, CT (UConn)\, NH (UNH)\, and VT (UVM) worked together over the last two years to develop innovative farm labor models and gather input from farmers and farm workers throughout New England and New York to explore challenges in attracting and retaining employees\, providing consistent employment on farms\, offering secure wages and benefits\, providing managerial opportunities\, and smoothing the ups and downs of demand. Is a farmer-cooperative to recruit employees feasible? Do farm workers want to participate in a “temp agency” type entity? \nFind out what we learned about these questions and more! Learn how these novel approaches might serve to inspire new collaborations to address farm labor challenges.  Come prepared to discuss the findings and be inspired to create your own role in advancing new solutions with other service providers and farmers. \nRegister today:  https://tufts.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJwpc-6rrj0jG9KaK2tszuuePA2722iQ-kpA \nFor more information\, visit:  https://www.nesfp.org/events/exploring-novel-approaches-farm-labor \nFor questions or accommodations\, please feel free to reach out to:  jennifer.hashley@tufts.edu

SUMMARY:Making a Livelihood on the Land
DESCRIPTION:Making a Livelihood on the Land: A live\, on-site workshop for new or aspiring farmers\n \nFriday April 22\, 2022\n9am to 5PM\nAt Seeds of Solidarity Farm and Education Center\, Orange MA \nApplication required\, read on for link (due 4/1 or sooner!) \nSliding scale (powered by generosity) \nSeeds of Solidarity is excited to host this workshop at their successful small vegetable farm created on land many deemed un-farmable\, and in a low wealth community. The paradigm of farming on expansive acreage with expensive machinery is inaccessible to most\, and often not ecologically or personally sustainable. Roadblocks to farming as a livelihood are based in centuries of injustice that impact who has access to land\, resources\, and power. Farming must be reimagined so young\, low wealth\, and farmers of color can stay in\, feed\, and forge a livelihood in their urban\, rural\, or suburban communities\, or in those to which they relocate. \nIf you are a new or aspiring farmer in the Northeast seeking: \n\n·      expertise on creative ways to find and access land\n·      ideas for funds and financing\n·      low-budget farming techniques for personal and climate resilience\n·      conversation about allies and community building\n\nApply here by April 1 for this workshop held LIVE at beautiful Seeds of Solidarity Farm. \nA terrific group of co-presenters is excited to share expertise and inspiration with you. \nWe are: Leigh Youngblood\, Land Justice Consultant; Rose Arruda\, MA Food Ventures and Urban Agriculture coordinator at MDAR; Rebecca Busansky\, PV Grows Investment Fund Manager at Franklin County CDC; Shaunia Flowers creator of 2 Cents Homegrown urban holistic herb\, produce and flower farm; Ricky Baruc and Deb Habib\, Seeds of Solidarity co-founders\, farmers\, and food justice workers. \nWe are striving for a participant group that is at least 50% people of color and/or low-wealth. In dedication to a rising\, diverse generation of new farmers\, we offer this workshop at a deeply discounted sliding scale rate of $15 to $85 with lunch included (actual value of $185). Spaces are limited. Apply here by April 1 or sooner.  Bonus: Participants may choose to stay for Saturday morning April 23 to receive support for their own farm visions. \nThis workshop is made possible through generosity\nVisit www.seedsofsolidarity.org for more workshop details including presenter info\nAnd our other programs\, workshops\, and events.\nCDC advised COVID protocol current on the workshop date will be followed

SUMMARY:Workshop: Drainage & Irrigation Adaptations at Kitchen Garden Farm
DESCRIPTION:Workshop: Drainage & Irrigation Adaptations at Kitchen Garden Farm \nPart of the Adapting Your Farm to Climate Change Annual Workshop Series 2022 \nWednesday\, June 15\, 5:30-7:30pm \nClick here to register. \nJoin Sunderland MA’s Kitchen Garden Farm and Joshua Faulkner of the University of Vermont’s Climate Change and Farming program for an inside look at tile drainage and drip irrigation adaptation practices in action. In 2019\, Kitchen Garden installed a new tile drainage system – one of only a few that has been installed locally in recent years. And since 2008\, the farm has been refining an irrigation system that covers field crops\, high tunnels\, and the farm’s propagation house. The first on-farm workshop after CISA’s Adapting Your Farm to Climate Change Annual Workshop Series kick-off webinar (view here)\, this farmer-focused event will share Kitchen Garden’s experiences with the two systems and answer your questions as you consider adaptations of your own. \nJoin CISA at Kitchen Garden for this workshop – and join us for drinks\, snacks\, and networking afterwards! \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:POSTPONED: On-farm Workshop: Irrigation Systems and Management at Warner Farm
DESCRIPTION:On-farm Workshop: Irrigation Systems and Management at Warner Farm \nPOSTPONED\, future date TBD \nWarner Farm\, 23 South Main Street Sunderland\, MA \nRegister Here \nWarner Farm\, a CSA and wholesale farm as well as the home of Mike’s Corn Maze\, located in Sunderland\, MA\, has been developing its irrigation capacity since the late 1970s. The farm’s rich sandy loam has been growing fruit and vegetable crops for centuries and as a changing climate brings changing precipitation patterns to New England\, Warner Farm is poised to respond effectively in times of drought. \nJoin CISA and Dave Wissemann of Warner Farm for an up close look at how they are optimizing their water resources and water distribution systems to ensure the sustainable production of crops throughout the season and in the face of increasingly uncertain growing conditions. \nThe workshop includes a farm walk to see irrigation equipment and set up and a detailed explanation of how the farm’s systems are designed and maintained. Following the farm walk\, join us for further discussion and some locally produced drinks and snacks! \nTo attend\, register and pay here (workshop fee is $10\, waiver available upon request.) \nFor more information\, contact Stephen Taranto\, CISA Climate Program Coordinator\, 413-665-7100\, ext. 17.

SUMMARY:We Are What We Eat: How food\, farms and community can save the planet
DESCRIPTION:A talk by Mark and Kristin Kimball\, owners of Essex Farm \nWith an introduction by Anna Houston \nOn August 6\, 2022 at 4:30 pm\, The New Marlborough Meeting House is pleased to host Mark and Kristin Kimball\, owners and operators of Essex Farm since 2003. “These are two of the most interesting farmers America has to offer–hopeful\, engaged\, funny\, hard-working\, and armed with a new model for feeding people that will make you stop and think!”— Bill McKibben. \nEssex Farms pioneered the free-choice\, full-diet CSA (Community Service Agriculture) model\, which the Kimballs see as an investment in sustainable farming as well as a means of getting quality produce. Their farm serves its produce year-round through a weekly distribution network that can be picked up or delivered through the Adirondack and Capital regions and even to New York City. All food is grown from the ground up: grass-feed beef\, pastured pork\, chicken\, eggs\, fifty different kinds of vegetables\, milk\, grains and flour\, fruit\, herbs\, maple syrup and soap. Animals are fed certified organic food; no conventional pesticides\, herbicides or fertilizers are used. The Kimballs employ solar- and horse-powered equipment whenever practical; they keep packaging at a minimum\, and what plastic is used is BPA-free. \nThe Kimballs’ aim is not just to sell healthy and affordable food; it is to ensure that Essex Farms remains a working farm\, ecologically and financially viable for years to come. “We envision the Champlain Valley as the birthplace of a new generation of sustainable agriculture\,” they say. “We foresee a future where farms power themselves\, their communities and the world.” A farm and those who get their food from it become a community\, a mutually beneficial system that can make big changes in the world. \nThe Kimballs will discuss their farm\, food and diet\, the rising awareness of the benefits of organic food and sustainable farming\, new systems of distribution\, and what they have in store for the future. In their eighteen years operating the farm\, the Kimballs have trained and mentored hundreds of beginning farmers\, who have gone on to start dozens of new farms. \nOn August 6 they will be introduced by local farmer Anna Houston\, who runs the Farm New Marlborough and has this to say about the Kimballs: “The Essex Farm model is slightly radical\, totally inspiring\, and incredibly hard. What they offer is more than food\, it is an exercise in how one thinks about how we value food and how we eat.” \nFor more details and to purchase tickets visit the New Marlborough Meeting House website. \nIf you would like to interview any of the participants contact Nick During at nduring@gmail.com or at (347) 570 3121

SUMMARY:18th Annual Harvest Supper Celebration (Greenfield)
DESCRIPTION:Join Stone Soup Café for the 18th Annual Harvest Supper Celebration on the Greenfield Town Common!  \nThe Harvest Supper is always free and open to everyone in the community. Swing by for delicious food\, music\, face painting\, story sharing\, and a “Really Really Free Store.” Saturday\, August 27 from 4PM to 7PM. \nThe rain date will be Sunday\, August 28th at the same time. \nLast year’s Harvest Supper was canceled last minute due to an impending hurricane\, the previous year was in a ‘to-go” format to accommodate the restrictions from the pandemic. To protect our community\, masks will still be strongly encouraged at this year’s event whenever possible. People are encouraged to bring their own plates\, cups\, and utensils to cut down on waste. \n\nThe Harvest Supper is an annual event celebrating local food\, farms\, and community. Every August\, the town comes together to share the farmers’ bountiful harvest with the community. Farmers and talented chefs donate their time and produce to create an amazing meal that is served to 800+ people every year. \nThis year the event will take place in-person\, with live music from local musicians like Ben Grosscup\, Annie Hassett\, Matt Goulet\, Ashley Kramer\, Musica Franklin\, and Antenna Cloud Farm Experimental Institute. \nThe Harvest Supper was started in 2005 by Juanita Nelson\, an ardent pacifist\, war tax resister\, civil rights activist\, and supporter of local\, organic agriculture. Nelson encouraged people to grow their own food and to support local farming as part of the local economy\, which she said was an expression of nonviolence. \nStone Soup is looking for over 100 volunteers to help make the supper a success. You can sign up for a volunteer shift on Stone Soup’s website: www.thestonesoupcafe.org. \nFor more information about this year’s Harvest Supper Celebration\, email info@thestonesoupcafe.org\, call 413-422-0020\, or visit our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/StoneSoupGreenfield.

SUMMARY:Will the Inflation Reduction Act Bring New Funding for Farms and Food Systems?
DESCRIPTION:The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) recently passed by Congress includes significant funding for agriculture\, much of it focused on climate change adaptation and conservation. Join CISA and Jesse Womack from the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition for a deep dive into the programs and funding that will be available to farms here in Massachusetts and beyond. Jesse will fill us in on key elements of the bill impacting how the funds will be spent\, how the programs will support the expansion of climate resilient food systems\, and how the IRA will impact next year’s Farm Bill renewal. \nAbout the presenter:\nJesse grew up working as labor on various farms and holds a B.A. in Environmental Studies from Gustavus Adolphus College and a Masters in Food and Agricultural Law and Policy from Vermont Law School. After undergrad\, Jesse served as an Americorps VISTA developing programing for local food farms and businesses in southern Minnesota. Jesse transitioned from that role to leading a nine-county agricultural resilience study while coordinating programing for the Feast! Local Foods Network. Most recently\, Jesse worked with the Nature Conservancy in Ohio to improve water quality and carbon outcomes by promoting conservation practices to farmers. \nWorkshop brought to you by CISA and Central Mass Grown. \nRegister here!

SUMMARY:Innovating for Resilience and Sustainability on an Organic CSA Farm
DESCRIPTION:Join Connie Adams and John Keilch of Yellow Stonehouse Farm in Westfield\, MA for a tour of the first organic vegetable farm and CSA in Hampden County. We will share the innovations we have implemented to improve climate resiliency and sustainability\, demonstrate the new\, lightweight equipment we use in our High Tunnels\, and how we use the High Tunnels for season extension and growing cold weather crops during winter\, plus show off the shallow tilling implements used in tight spaces that allow us to maintain cover cropping in areas that aren’t planted. We will also discuss the grants we’ve received to improve energy efficiency and equip our farm store to improve the availability of fresh\, local produce to our community and how we are working with local food pantries and state agencies as well as providing SNAP-HIP farm shares to help address food insecurity.  Join us for an informative romp around the farm! \nAccessibility Info: This tour is semi-accessible as we have thresholds between some areas\, such as at the store door\, and the fields have uneven lanes. Individuals in wheelchairs will either need to be pushed by a helper in their party\, or have great upper body strength themselves. \nRain date: September 20\, 2022 \nFor more information and to RSVP\, contact Connie Adams.
