SUMMARY:Registration Deadline: Farm Succession School
DESCRIPTION:Farm Succession School returns to New England. \nAmong farmers’ biggest challenges is planning for farm succession. The Farm Succession School provides farmers and farming couples looking toward retirement and farm transition with the structured and sustained support to make decisions\, engage their families\, and organize the legal and financial mechanics. \nTopics include goal setting\, estate planning\, retirement planning\, family communications\, taxes\, legal structures\, bringing on a successor\, and much more. \nA commitment of just three days over the winter months will allow farmers to develop a concrete plan for their farm business\, their land\, and their retirement. The program includes presentations\, group discussions and individual exercises\, with “homework” between sessions. \nFarmers who have participated loved the amount of attention they received and valued the trust and sharing that developed among the participants\, regardless of scale or type of enterprise. ‘It is a big relief to me! Thanks for the push to get it done! The course was well worthwhile\,” shared one farmer. “A must do! Definitely would recommend it. Well worth the time!” commented another. Read more of what farmers had to say. \nTwo Locations! Open to farmers in all New England states. Farm Succession School is a three-session program; from 10:00am – 3:30pm. \nWarwick\, Rhode Island:\nDecember 11\, 2018; January 9\, 2019; and February 8\, 2019 \nBedford\, New Hampshire:\nDecember 12\, 2018; January 10\, 2019; and February 7\, 2019 \nThe fee is $300 per farmer or farm couple. This includes lunch\, refreshments and materials. Participants will get $200 back toward additional succession-related advising. \nInstructors include: \nJon Jaffe\nFarm Business Consultant\nFarm Credit East\njon.jaffe@farmcrediteast.com \nKathy Ruhf\nSenior Advisor\nLand For Good\nkathy@landforgood.org \nAn attorney with expertise in succession planning in each state. \nFor more information or to register\, go to landforgood.org/events. SUMMARY:Towards a New Reconstruction: Land\, Racism\, and Economic Emancipation
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce the 38th Annual E. F. Schumacher Lectures with speakers Leah Penniman and Ed Whitfield. The theme of this year’s event is “Towards a New Reconstruction: Land\, Racism\, and Economic Emancipation.” The talks will take place on Saturday\, October 27th from 1:00pm to 5:00pm at Saint James Place in Great Barrington\, Massachusetts. \nThe 38th Annual E. F. Schumacher Lectures will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of W. E. B. Du Bois\, born in Great Barrington on February 23\, 1868. Du Bois would become a figure of international importance—the first black man to receive a Ph.D. from Harvard University\, a tireless advocate for the rights of marginalized people everywhere\, a founder of the Niagara Movement and the NAACP\, and the author of countless influential works of scholarship. \nDu Bois believed that racial justice was inseparable from economic justice and that economic inequality was the engine and not simply the consequence of a deeper social inequality. Speakers Leah Penniman and Ed Whitfield are doing work that builds on the legacy of W. E. B. Du Bois— his commitment to black economic development\, cooperative structures\, and fair access to land. \nPenniman\, co-founder of Soul Fire Farm\, is working to end racism in the food system. The title of Penniman’s talk is “Farming While Black: A Legacy of Innovation and Resistance.” \nWhitfield\, co-founder and co-managing director of the Fund for Democratic Communities\, has written and spoken extensively on non-extractive finance\, reparations\, and building investment structures that support community self-determination. \nTickets for the 38th Annual E. F. Schumacher Lectures are on sale now for $25 and may be purchased online here or through the “buy tickets” button below.  If you wish to purchase tickets by cash\, check\, or BerkShares local currency\, please contact the Schumacher Center directly at (413) 528-1737 or send payment to: \nSchumacher Center for a New Economics\n140 Jug End Road\,\nGreat Barrington\, MA 01230
