SUMMARY:Webinar: Produce Safety Rules for Food and Farm Businesses
DESCRIPTION:Please join Joe Levitt and Elizabeth Fawell\, attorneys at Hogan Lovells US LLP\, in collaboration with Conservation Law Foundation’s Legal Food Hub\, for a webinar on the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act’s (FSMA) Produce Safety Rule. This rule establishes standards for safe growing\, harvesting\, packing\, and holding of fruits and vegetables grown for human food. In addition to learning about the requirements of the rule\, you will hear about exemptions and modified requirements. If you are a farmer\, this is an opportunity to understand what your obligations are\, and whether you are exempt or have fewer requirements to follow. For those not exempt\, it is a chance to learn what you need to be doing. For attorneys\, this valuable session will help you understand what your farm and food clients’ needs may be\, allowing you to better provide counsel on this important food safety law and its implementing rules. \nJoe Levitt is a partner at Hogan Lovells US LLP and is a former director of FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. Elizabeth Fawell is counsel at Hogan Lovells US LLP. Together\, they have represented food industry interests throughout both the legislative development and the subsequent FDA rulemaking stages of FSMA. Now they counsel food industry clients on an ongoing basis regarding FSMA compliance. They will bring this deep experience and knowledge of FSMA to the Legal Food Hub community. \n============ \nAudience members should use the following dial-in numbers to join the conference: \n1 (888) 424-8151 – Audience US Toll Free\n1 (847) 585-4422 – Audience US Toll \nAudience Passcode: 9535 651 \nAudience local and international free phone telephone numbers:\nhttp://web.meetme.net/r.aspx?p=11&a=UjnYDodoYatEBy \nWebcast URL:\nhttp://event.onlineseminarsolutions.com/wcc/r/1514413-1/80B43484D6C6E05D016C5FCC0BEDB88C

SUMMARY:Social Justice and the New Food Activism
DESCRIPTION:Lecture by Julie Guthman\, 2017–2018 Frances B. Cashin Fellow\, Radcliffe Institute; professor of social sciences\, University of California\, Santa Cruz \nThe alternative food movement has been tremendously successful at raising awareness of many of the public health and ecological consequences of the conventional food system. Yet\, as many critics have noted\, market-based alternatives have done very little to undermine industrially-produced food; nor have they resonated much with poor people and communities of color. In the last decade or so\, a new food activism has emerged\, one that is more contentious\, more collective\, and more inclusive. \nIn this talk\, Guthman will discuss the origins and development of the food movement in order to explain how it came to focus on marked based alternatives and also to show how it has evolved response to critique. Shen will then discuss three cases that reflect a new food activism\, with particular focus on the battle against methyl bromide in strawberry production. \nGuthman is a recipient of the Excellent in Research Award from the Agriculture\, Food and Human Values Society. Her first book\, Agrarian Dreams: The Paradox of Organic Farming in California\, was awarded the Donald Q. Innis Award from the Rural Geography Speciality Group of the Association of American Geographers and the Frederick H. Buttel Award for Outstanding Scholarly Achievement from the Rural Sociological Society. Her second book\, Weighing In: Obesity\, Food Justice\, and the Limits of Capitalism\, earned the James E. Blaut Award for Innovative Publication from the Cultural and Political Ecology Specialty Group of the Association of American Geographers and the Association for the Study of Food and Society Book Award. She has recently finished her third book\, The New Food Activism: Opposition\, Cooperation\, and Collective Action. \nTo learn more and to register\, visit www.radcliffe.harvard.edu/event/2017-julie-guthman-fellow-presentation. \nThe event is free and open to the public. We encourage you to share this invitation with people you know who may be interested in attending this event.
