Attendees will come away knowing how SNAP works and how to successfully and legally run a transaction on Conduent and TotilPay machines. \nThis training will also cover the SNAP protocols and rules that the USDA requires businesses to cover with their employees every year. \nThis training is for employees who will be processing SNAP transactions. DESCRIPTION:A talk by Mark and Kristin Kimball\, owners of Essex Farm \nWith an introduction by Anna Houston \nOn August 6\, 2022 at 4:30 pm\, The New Marlborough Meeting House is pleased to host Mark and Kristin Kimball\, owners and operators of Essex Farm since 2003. “These are two of the most interesting farmers America has to offer–hopeful\, engaged\, funny\, hard-working\, and armed with a new model for feeding people that will make you stop and think!”— Bill McKibben. \nEssex Farms pioneered the free-choice\, full-diet CSA (Community Service Agriculture) model\, which the Kimballs see as an investment in sustainable farming as well as a means of getting quality produce. Their farm serves its produce year-round through a weekly distribution network that can be picked up or delivered through the Adirondack and Capital regions and even to New York City. All food is grown from the ground up: grass-feed beef\, pastured pork\, chicken\, eggs\, fifty different kinds of vegetables\, milk\, grains and flour\, fruit\, herbs\, maple syrup and soap. Animals are fed certified organic food; no conventional pesticides\, herbicides or fertilizers are used. The Kimballs employ solar- and horse-powered equipment whenever practical; they keep packaging at a minimum\, and what plastic is used is BPA-free. \nThe Kimballs’ aim is not just to sell healthy and affordable food; it is to ensure that Essex Farms remains a working farm\, ecologically and financially viable for years to come. “We envision the Champlain Valley as the birthplace of a new generation of sustainable agriculture\,” they say. “We foresee a future where farms power themselves\, their communities and the world.” A farm and those who get their food from it become a community\, a mutually beneficial system that can make big changes in the world. \nThe Kimballs will discuss their farm\, food and diet\, the rising awareness of the benefits of organic food and sustainable farming\, new systems of distribution\, and what they have in store for the future. DESCRIPTION:Join Stone Soup Café for the 18th Annual Harvest Supper Celebration on the Greenfield Town Common!  \nThe Harvest Supper is always free and open to everyone in the community. Swing by for delicious food\, music\, face painting\, story sharing\, and a “Really Really Free Store.” Saturday\, August 27 from 4PM to 7PM. \nThe rain date will be Sunday\, August 28th at the same time. \nLast year’s Harvest Supper was canceled last minute due to an impending hurricane\, the previous year was in a ‘to-go” format to accommodate the restrictions from the pandemic. To protect our community\, masks will still be strongly encouraged at this year’s event whenever possible. People are encouraged to bring their own plates\, cups\, and utensils to cut down on waste. \n\nThe Harvest Supper is an annual event celebrating local food\, farms\, and community. Every August\, the town comes together to share the farmers’ bountiful harvest with the community. Farmers and talented chefs donate their time and produce to create an amazing meal that is served to 800+ people every year. \nThis year the event will take place in-person\, with live music from local musicians like Ben Grosscup\, Annie Hassett\, Matt Goulet\, Ashley Kramer\, Musica Franklin\, and Antenna Cloud Farm Experimental Institute. \nThe Harvest Supper was started in 2005 by Juanita Nelson\, an ardent pacifist\, war tax resister\, civil rights activist\, and supporter of local\, organic agriculture. Nelson encouraged people to grow their own food and to support local farming as part of the local economy\, which she said was an expression of nonviolence. \nStone Soup is looking for over 100 volunteers to help make the supper a success. Answers to this survey will not only structure the LWG meeting\, but will also guide our work going forward. \nThis survey and meeting are an opportunity to provide input on natural resource priorities for the NRCS and the state conservationist. DESCRIPTION:The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) recently passed by Congress includes significant funding for agriculture\, much of it focused on climate change adaptation and conservation. Join CISA and Jesse Womack from the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition for a deep dive into the programs and funding that will be available to farms here in Massachusetts and beyond. Jesse will fill us in on key elements of the bill impacting how the funds will be spent\, how the programs will support the expansion of climate resilient food systems\, and how the IRA will impact next year’s Farm Bill renewal. \nAbout the presenter:\nJesse grew up working as labor on various farms and holds a B.A. in Environmental Studies from Gustavus Adolphus College and a Masters in Food and Agricultural Law and Policy from Vermont Law School. After undergrad\, Jesse served as an Americorps VISTA developing programing for local food farms and businesses in southern Minnesota. Jesse transitioned from that role to leading a nine-county agricultural resilience study while coordinating programing for the Feast! Local Foods Network. DESCRIPTION:Join Connie Adams and John Keilch of Yellow Stonehouse Farm in Westfield\, MA for a tour of the first organic vegetable farm and CSA in Hampden County. We will share the innovations we have implemented to improve climate resiliency and sustainability\, demonstrate the new\, lightweight equipment we use in our High Tunnels\, and how we use the High Tunnels for season extension and growing cold weather crops during winter\, plus show off the shallow tilling implements used in tight spaces that allow us to maintain cover cropping in areas that aren’t planted. We will also discuss the grants we’ve received to improve energy efficiency and equip our farm store to improve the availability of fresh\, local produce to our community and how we are working with local food pantries and state agencies as well as providing SNAP-HIP farm shares to help address food insecurity.  Join us for an informative romp around the farm! \nAccessibility Info: This tour is semi-accessible as we have thresholds between some areas\, such as at the store door\, and the fields have uneven lanes. DESCRIPTION:Exploring the Small Farm Dream Course \nOctober 5 to November 2\, 2022\, Wednesday evenings 6:00pm – 9:00pm \nWestern Mass location (tentatively MDAR office in West Springfield) \nThis 5-session course provides guidance to aspiring farmers through the decision-making process of whether to start a farm business.  Participants will learn about the many aspects of starting a farm business\, assess their own skills and knowledge\, and get help finding resources for support\, including marketing\, financing\, and regulations.  The Exploring the Small Farm Dream course utilizes the curriculum and workbook developed by the New England Small Farm Institute. Through four guided group sessions and a farmer panel session\, participants will analyze the feasibility of their small farm dream and clarify their vision together with other class participants. This course is sponsored and financially supported by the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources and is intended for new agricultural entrepreneurs planning to start their farm business in Massachusetts. The course fee is $100 for up to two participants per enterprise\, as space allows. \n*Plans are for an in-person class with the location to be determined based on interest from those who submit an application and are added to the waiting list. DESCRIPTION:Growing Your Farm Business Planning Course\nOctober 11 – November 29\, 2022\, Tuesday evenings 5:30 – 8:30pm \nMDAR office in Southborough\, MA  \nA hands-on course to help established farmers develop a business plan and financial projections for their farm business. This course covers topics including resource assessment\, marketing strategy\, financial management\, risk management\, quality of life\, and goal setting. The course is taught by a professional business planner with years of experience working with Massachusetts farms and guest speakers on topics such as succession planning and online marketing. Enrollment is open to farmers who have been operating a farm business in Massachusetts for at least the two prior years. Eight weekly classes will be held in person in Southborough on Tuesday evenings starting October 11 and ending November 29.  The course fee\, subsidized by MDAR\, is $150 per farm.
