DESCRIPTION:After a day of hiking\, leafing peeping or pumpkin picking\, you’ll want to be sure to join this quintessential New England autumn event at Red Fire Farm in Granby. Wheelhouse Farm Truck and Catering will be preparing a delicious multi-course meal using the bounty from the certified organic farm. Not only will you be led on a tour of the CSA farm\, you’ll also engage in a discussion about the partnerships local farms maintain with The Food Bank\, and how their healthy produce makes its way to underserved communities throughout western Massachusetts through the Mobile Food Bank program. \nThe Food Banks is proud of its longstanding relationship with area farmers\, who partner with them to ensure that everyone has access to healthy food\, regardless of their circumstances. The program will bring you from thinking about the future to doing active planning. Your commitment of three winter days will help to guide you toward a successful planning outcome for you\, your family and your farm. \nYou will come away with a concrete game plan for your farm business\, your land and your retirement. Whether or not you have an identified successor\, this program will give you information\, tools and advice to build a realistic plan that meets your objectives and enables you to take next steps. \nThe program consists of working sessions\, presentations from experts\, group discussion and individual exercises. Between sessions\, participants will complete homework such as worksheets\, readings and family meetings. Topics include goal setting\, estate planning\, retirement planning\, family communications\, taxes\, legal structure\, Medicaid\, and bringing on a successor. \nThe fee is $300 per farmer or farm couple\, including lunch and materials. Plus\, participants will receive a $200 credit toward hiring succession-related technical assistance. \nAdditional benefit! DESCRIPTION:(note: this meeting is at the main farm on River Rd\, and NOT at the Atlas Farm store on Routes 5 & 10 in S. Deerfield) \nA functional wash and pack area can improve both workflow and produce safety. FSMA’s Produce Rule states that equipment\, tools\, and buildings must be of adequate design and able to be cleaned and properly maintained. We will discuss the range of options available for growers of different scales to meet these requirements. We’ll tour the wash house with a recirculating washer-conveyer at Atlas Farm with owner\, Gideon Porth and hear about the design of a mobile wash station by Amanda Brown from the UMass Student Farm. We will also cover how to develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and keep sanitation records. DESCRIPTION:The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts has an urgent need for volunteers who want to make a difference in the lives of hundreds of people by volunteering at their local farmers markets\, CSAs\, and farm stands to help explain a new Massachusetts program called the Healthy Incentive Program\, or HIP. \nJoin the Food Bank for a one time\, 1.5 hour training on Wednesday\, September 20th\, from 9:30-11am\, to learn how you can help!  \nHIP is a program that incentivizes families and individuals receiving SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program- formerly known as food stamps) to shop at farmers markets\, CSAs\, and farm stands. Depending on their household sizes\, SNAP recipients can be reimbursed up to $20 for buy fresh produce at their local farmers markets! \nHIP has already proven to be wildly successful\, pouring thousands of dollars into the local food market while expanding access to fresh\, local produce to thousands of families. Warm Colors Apiary is the only apiary in the Northeast certified by the RHBA & USDA to raise selected Russian Queens. Appropriate for beekeepers & non-beekeepers. \n12:00 noon – 1:00PM – “Cooking with Honey” Pamela Adams (Pastry Chef / University of Massachusetts) will talk about cooking with honey\, and will share recipes and samples with our guests. Pamela has won national awards for her recipes\, and  helped earn UMass it’s second year of being recognized for having the best University food by the Princeton Review \n1:00 – 2:00PM – “Plants that Feed Pollinators” Marian & Ed Symanski will introduce you to the world of flowers and pollinators. Flowering plants produce nectar & pollen that feeds millions of pollinators. Pollinators increase fertilization in the plants resulting in fruits\, nuts and vegetables that feed countless species\, including humans. Marian and Ed will share their knowledge & collection of pollinator plant pictures. This is an excellent presentation for beekeepers and gardeners looking for plants that attract and feed pollinators. \n2:00 – 3:00PM – “State of Massachusetts Honeybees” Kim Skirm PhD. Massachusetts State Apiary Inspector. Kim will provide an update on conditions found by inspectors and describe current services and support provided by the Massachusetts Department of Agriculture. \n3:00 – 4:00PM – “Science\, Research\, and Honeybee Health” Dan Conlon (co-owner of Warm Colors Apiary) will talk about the latest findings by researchers relating to honeybee health. Each year research expands our understanding of how bees communicate\, adapt to disease and pests\, and the essential link they make between plants\, wildlife and humans in the circle of life.
