The Cooking Matters Program Coordinator position works closely with the Cooking Matters Program Manager to implement and support all aspects of the program in accordance with state and national goals and policies. The Program Coordinator’s primary responsibility is to coordinate the signature six-week healthy cooking and nutrition course and to schedule and facilitate one-time grocery store tours.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate high quality courses and tours statewide, with a focus on western MA: serve as the liaison with community partners, maintain regular communication with volunteer team, and address unexpected programmatic challenges as they arise, elevating as necessary.
  • Identify community partners within the western region of the state that would be appropriate course and tour partners and assess their interest in the program; conduct ongoing assessment of existing partners to ensure programming meets quality standards and adheres to funding and priority audience goals
  • Schedule 50+ grocery store tours annually in compliance with SNAP-ed goals by building and maintaining a network of community partners, assessing staff capacity and assigning staff to implement tours according to guidelines provided.
  • Determine needs for each individual Cooking Matters program and complete preparations, including gathering equipment, supplies, and groceries that adhere to the program budget; and transporting supplies
  • Coach volunteer instructors on how to use training materials and curricula to communicate key messages in ways that are relevant and applicable to the lives of program participants, including offering regular constructive feedback.
  • As needed, fill the culinary or nutrition instructor role.
  • Identify and participate in opportunities to recruit and train volunteers. Build relationships with chefs, dietitians, and nutritionists to maintain enough trained instructors to reach course goals. Provide recognition to volunteers for their efforts
  • Execute assigned annual project such as social media for NKHMA, Cooking Matters at the Store event days, inventory and ordering of all supplies and materials, and policy, system, and environment change work.
  • Complete all program and financial reporting in a timely and accurate fashion.

Reports To: Program Manager

Location: Home office, western Massachusetts

Working Conditions:

Home office work environment, various community organization settings, and regular travel throughout the state for programming. Work hours will include 1-3 evenings per week and 1-2 out-of-state trips per year. Has regular contact with Cooking Matters local and national staff, community stakeholders, volunteers, community partners, and program participants.


  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Fluency in spoken and written Spanish preferred.
  • Experienced in nutrition, culinary arts, community outreach, community development, and/or nonprofits preferred.
  • Ability to work effectively, cultivate and maintain positive, mutually beneficial relationships with diverse stakeholders including volunteers, chefs, nutrition educators, agency personnel, community advocates and diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and quickly assess routine issues, problems or situations, and effectively implement solutions.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and balance a variety of tasks simultaneously.
  • Experience with volunteer management preferred.
  • Strong computer skills, including Excel and PowerPoint, as well as the ability to quickly learn new software programs and online platforms.
  • Ability to work evenings and occasional weekends as necessary.
  • Driver’s license and car required.
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds
