Greenhorns Web Manager Job Description

Greenhorns works to promote, recruit and support the next generation of farmers through grassroots media production. Our role is to explore the context in which new farmers face the world.

Through our literary journal, the New Farmer’s Almanac (now in its sixth volume), as well as workshops, digital media, online curricula, quidebooks, and advocacy, our constellation of collaborators engages and animates a national community of new and young landworkers.

We are seeking a skilled Web Manager to ensure our websites and social media platforms meet our diverse communities’ needs. Web Manager responsibilities include enhancing user experience by maintaining and enhancing our user-friendly, accessible, visually appealing, and secure sites. Attention to detail and effective communication are essential, as this position balances creativity and analytical thinking. The Web Manager will work closely with other Greenhorns staff as well as with content creators from our external partners.

Position Location: Remote

The following duties are the responsibility of the Web Manager:

  • Maintains Smithereenfarm.com and Greenhorns.org
  • Is not responsible for regularly updating content pages unless specifically requested; but can help team members responsible for updating content (Graphics, Office, Library) with troubleshooting regarding formating or functionality
  • Manage and perform complex web edits and development (minor edits will be performed by
  •  Web Support Staff) including troubleshooting with Web Support Staff (i.e., Breaker Posey etc.)
  • Assist in transition and hiring of new Web Developer (if/as needed)
  • Manage Greenhorns Server and Rackspace
  • Provides regular maintenance and security updates on WordPress for both sites
  • Installs appropriate plug-ins as new functionalities are requested
  • Builds new pages / features of the site as requested (e.g. shop functionality, calendar integration/functionality)
  • Builds new websites and supports redesign as needed, with Figma or Sketch files from designer (e.g. smithereenfarm.com redesign, tech-busters.org in progress)
  • Tests websites across browsers, operating systems and devices
  • Helps connect and integrate software / services / databases as needed (e.g. Mailchimp integration into WordPress website, connecting Faire or Hubspot to WordPress shop inventory to create wholesale portal on webshop.
  • Supports team members navigating technology (website, social media, WIFI, passwords) who may reach the limits of their knowledge (e.g. account recovery, 2FA issues, cyber security
  • Supports regular postings to social media platforms and management of social media messaging and communications.

Salary range: $20-$25 an hour
