Farming on the Fringe: Guerrilla Propagation Tactics for Foodies, Activists and Lonely Hearts

May 15, 2016 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

This is an intensive, basic level workshop for those who would wish to seriously grow (more of) their own high-quality, nutrient-dense herbs, fruits, nuts and produce from marginal “backyard” plots, containers, rooftops, passive greenhouses, (or wherever) under a variety of “marginal”, real-life conditions.

Inspired both by dumpster diving philosophy, permaculture principles as well as the amorphous, “guerrilla gardening” movement, which teaches us to transcend the rules and to “farm everything”, passionate grower Danny Botkin will discuss and demonstrate a series of small-scale, alternative planting and propagating practices, including natural soil building and organic composting, “low-till” bed management, sheet mulching for soil protection and weed control, low-tech season extension, as well as other simple tips and shortcuts to raise and harvest healthy seeds, seedlings, produce, flowers and herbs from marginal spaces, without machinery, capital or fossil fuel…

The class begins with a review of several basic permaculture gardening concepts and practices, followed by an extended greenhouse/farm tour, a pipe bending demo (for making low tunnel “hoops”), and a Q and A session over a casual, farmy lunch…

Suggested donation: $25-$35. No one turned away. Space limited, please RSVP by email, phone: 413-863-8696 or Facebook.
