NOFA-NY Field Days: Organic Brassica School

October 30, 2014 @ 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

$10 – $15

As brassica season winds down, join NOFA-NY, Cornell researchers and educators, and Bejo Seeds to discuss all things Brassica!  This intensive workshop begins with Jan van der Heide of Bejo discussing brassica cultivation from managing crops to reduce disease and insect pressure, through selecting varieties that complement your farm’s soil fertility limitations or insect and disease pressure.  NYS IPM Coordinator Abby Seaman and Cornell Plant Pathology’s Chris Smart will discuss monitoring and organic controls for flea beetles, Swede midge, cabbage worms, black rot, and more, and Cornell Horticulture’s Thomas Bjorkman will close the session with an examination and discussion of market opportunities and the economics of fresh-market organic broccoli.  After the workshop, farmers are welcome to check out Bejo’s late fall plantings and demonstration gardens.

Registration: To pre-register, click here or call Stephanie at 585-271-1979 ext. 509. Pre-registration is encouraged and closes at 4pm on October 27th. After this, registration will be taken at the event- please arrive 15 minutes early to walk-in register.

This program is sponsored by NOFA-NY through NYSDAM Specialty Crop Block Grant.
