Winter Sheep Shearing

October 10, 2015 @ 9:30 am - 4:00 pm

Winterberry Farm will hold its semi-annual sheep shearing, fiber celebration and open farm day, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Because they’re changing to a fall shearing system for most of the flock, Gwen Hinman the shearer will begin earlier, about 10 a.m. She’ll be shearing about 25, working until about noon.

Fiber demonstrations will start after shearing. Weaving, spinning on spindle and wheel, needle felting and fleece skirting and washing will be shown. A herding demonstration by one of the farm’s border collies will take place at the end of the day.

Lots of farm-grown fiber will be displayed and available for sale throughout the day. Raw fleece — washed, dyed, roving — and our soft mill spun yarn, hand-dyed here at the farm. Angora from the bunnies and mohair from the colored angora goats as well. The farm’s animals (sheep, goats, rabbits; ducks, geese and guineas) will be available for greeting all day.

Lamb and duck are available for take home cooking and other food for sampling.
