Working with Draft Horses- Weekend Intensive

May 2, 2015 - May 3, 2015

This workshop will introduce people to draft horses, and is a great beginner course for anyone interested in learning the fundamentals of driving horses. The course breaks down the process of driving a Draft into basic steps designed to teach student the type and quality of information that these horses need to do their jobs.

The group of horses to be used in this workshop may include horses of various sizes and ages. In this course, students will get hands-on experience with a few draft horses, and two or 3 types of harnesses they wear, with a special focus on the New England D-ring style harness; New England’s traditional work horse harness.

A good deal of time will be devoted to creating trust and safety between new teamsters and horses by building knowledge of communication between species.  Students will learn techniques for sending quality information to horses threw reins weather on foot or driving from a cart or wagon.  Safe hitching will also be covered.

The workshop intensive runs over the course of a weekend, May 2 – 3 (10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. on Sunday).
