Market Garden and Field Crop Assistant
Hours: April – October, 30-40 hr. / week.
Must be available to work early mornings and Saturdays
Upinngil’s 1/4 acre Market Garden and Hoop House grows fresh greens, tomatoes, peppers, carrots, cucumbers, and much more for direct retail on our farm stand. It is managed intensively, no-till and entirely with hand tools. We are looking for a candidate with a strong interest in Market Gardening and no-till practices to dedicate 1/2 to 2/3 of their energies to this area of the farm. We hope to find someone willing to learn this season and perhaps come back again next season and work with more autonomy. There will be the possibility of becoming the Market Gardener if all parties agree it is a good fit.
This person will work closely with the Market Gardener to learn the ropes of our system. Duties will include: assisting with daily morning harvest, washing, packing, and stocking farm store, daily watering, weeding, tending, planting. They will be asked to spend the rest of their time assisting the Field Manager with general farm harvesting, planting, and cultivation of row crops. Our row crops consist of strawberries, sweet corn, melons, leeks, potatoes, winter squash and some fall brassicas. Upinngil growing methods cannot be easily categorized as either Conventional or Organic, rather we are a mixture of methods always striving to find a healthy sustainable balance.
Necessary Skills:
– Able to lift 50 lb.
– Fit and able to work bent over for long periods.
– Work well independently.
– Knowledge of Market Gardening, farming, and weed identification.
Compensation:
– starting pay: $15 / hr. (state min wage)
