Hiring: Cook/Teacher – The Farm School

Farm School, Program for Visiting School Cook/Teacher job opportunity

The Farm School is looking for a highly motivated and energized Cook/Teacher to join our Nourishment Team and staff of farmer/teachers, in working to give an authentic farm experience  to over 1500 students a year. As a member of the Nourishment Team at The Farm School, you will work directly with the Kitchen Operations Coordinator and Cook and other nourishment  team members, along with our students and farmers, to prepare and serve meals that nourish
and connect our plates back to the farm.

The Farm School Kitchen is the hearth center, and the scene of a dynamic intergenerational cooking experience; we cook and eat together. The music is varied and the menu is inspired by the farm and everyone who shares our table. The Cook/Teacher will lead small groups of  students in prepping/ executing various components of each meal, as well as independent prep,
dishwashing, organizational tasks and facilitating bunk house chores – our version of breakfast/dinner service.

Hours during school program visits will vary, but will average out over the course of a year to around 45 hours per week working mostly Monday thru Friday and participation in the staff weekend animal chore rotation with some optional occasional weekend cooking events at additional pay.

Prior cooking or culinary experience and an ability to independently manage meals from start to finish across a wide range of dietary needs and restrictions is necessary for this role, along with a passion for great food, fresh ingredients and an ability to organize a kitchen operation that safely empowers youth’s comfort with food and ability to create the meals they will eat while on the farm.

Responsibilities and Qualities:
– To organize your work area, plans and programs in ways that uplift the FS mission and goals towards Racial Equity.
– Experience cooking or work within the culinary field
– Attention to detail and ability to keep food and allergen safety awareness and guidelines
– To be able to connect with youth, be a team player, build relationships that engage youth in the fun, joy, relaxation, openness, and community feel of the farm as you prepare food and tend to the bunkhouse.
– To bring various aspects of your hobbies, interest and identities into your work and to
share these as you would like with the youth and farmer teachers as well.

– To be thoughtful, respectful, dependable, collaborative in your interactions with youth, recognizing their value, autonomy and personhood
– To have an ability to work within a schedule that has multiple transitions
– To be reliable in meeting your scheduled commitments and in your communication when
changes or support is needed
– Participate in programmatic activities including options, class, chores, variety shows,
campfires, dish clean-up, evening activities, community meetings and opening & closing
circles.
– To follow all health code and Covid protocols expressed by The Farm School and Board
of Health
– Maintain and makes changes as necessary to our kitchen guidelines (including use of
space guidelines for shared staff kitchens)
– Help to organize and stock shared staff kitchens at the end of each season and help to
welcome staff into these spaces
– Menu Planning
– Routine Cleaning
– Participate in the hiring process for future nourishment staff (including summer
dishwashing crew and staff required for non-PVS cooking needs that aren’t being filled
by the nourishment team)

Compensation and Benefits include:
$38,000 to $45,000 starting annual salary, onsite housing possible based on availability, relocation benefits, employer paid health insurance, professional development funds, farm grown food, 6 days of sick/personal time, 6 weeks paid vacation, 2% annual retirement contribution.
