Crabapple Farm Wheat Workshop and Harvest

July 27, 2013 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

Wheat Workshop, Saturday July 27th 9am-11am

We have been growing wheat on a small scale and harvesting by hand for several years. For the past few years, we have been trialling heritage varieties, to determine which varieties do best in our location and how the characteristics of the varieties are different. We have about two dozen varieties in our field this year. In this workshop we will look at growing wheat from planting to harvesting, looking at simple techniques that work in our climate. We will discuss our hand methods and simple machines that can speed things up. We will also look at our variety trials, and discuss the benefits to heritage varieties.

Workshop fee: suggested donation $10-$20

Wheat Harvest, Saturday July 27th 11am-5pm (weather permitting – check here for rain dates as the date approaches)

Join us for an old-fashioned wheat harvest. Using sickles and scythes, we will harvest our field of heritage wheat by hand. Following age old practices, we will reap the stalks and bind them into sheaves, which will then be shocked. If some varieties are mature enough, we may also do some threshing and winnowing. Bring a picnic lunch. There will be ways for all ages and abilities to be involved.
