Workshop: Long Term Food Storage

August 6, 2015 @ 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Have you ever wanted the nitty-gritty on serious bulk food storage? Putting food aside in times of plenty has a rich human history, and makes great sense contemporarily in terms of frugal home economics, preparedness, and charity. We’ll look briefly at cyclical (year-to-year) low energy food storage- covering garden produce to dehydrators, root cellars, lactofermentation, and freezing and packaging meat. We will then delve more deeply into long-term, true sealed and “stockpiled” storage of dry goods. We’ll toss around the pros and cons of various storage vessels, buckets, lid types, desiccants, how to calculate amounts and duration for your family, and look at some very basic organization for cycling food through. At the end of the course, anyone who wishes to stick around over a cup of tea with questions or to discuss food storage ethics is welcome.

 Any pre-course recommended reading?

No pre-course reading required. Sharon Astyk’s Independence Days is recommended as an excellent resource and primer, and will be available for perusal the the course.
