Assistant Farm Manager: Part-time (now until May/June) Full-time, May/June-October

About us: Birdhaven Blueberry Farm is located in Southampton and sits on 11 beautiful acres. We have two acres of mature blueberry bushes and we operate mostly as a PYO. We also grow black currants in the summer and Asin pears in the fall. We are not organically certified but we practice
organic methods on our farm. We are currently working on expanding our operations to include an acre of raspberries, 3-4 acres of strawberries, two more acres of blueberries (for wholesale) and an apple and peach orchard.

Position description : The assistant farm manager is a seasonal position and supports the farm manager in all aspects of organic fruit production and PYO operations. This individual must be willing to work in variable environmental conditions (heat, rain, cold, etc.) and be self motivated. The
assistant farm manager will also be responsible for operating and maintaining farm equipment (tractor, mower, sprayer, etc.) and managing a small crew of farm laborers. This individual will also closely interact with our loyal PYO customers and help provide them with a great picking experience through exceptional customer service. The assistant farm manager will also help manage and maintain the farm store.

Responsibilities:
– Assist the Farm Manager in all aspects of organic small fruit production,including weed/pest management, harvesting, crop planning, field and PYO operations
– Assist Farm Manager in supervising the farm crew in daily operations
– Help manage and maintain farm equipment, infrastructure and facilities, including tractor, mower, farm store and customer pathways
– With the farm manager, help hire and train seasonal farm crew
– Work with the Farm Manager to monitor, evaluate and improve soil fertility, manage pest and weed control and help develop crop plans for future expansions into raspberry, strawberry, apple and peach productions
– Help to create a positive and friendly work environment
– Maintain exceptional customer service and attitude while helping our PYO customers

Qualifications:
– At least two years of direct, hands-on experience on a production-orientated organic fruit farm (blueberry experience a plus)
– Experience operating and maintaining farm equipment (tractor, sprayers, etc)
– Associates or College degree in Agriculture, not necessary but highly desirable
– Ability to work independently with little supervision or as a member of a team
– Excellent communication skills
– Experience supervising other staff
– Ability to work long hours in variable weather conditions and perform physically strenuous farm tasks including bending and lifting over 50 pounds
– Strong work ethic, willingness to be flexible and a positive attitude
– Driver’s license and clean driving record

Compensation: Starting wages are commensurate with experience and qualifications but will be no less than $18.00/hour. This is a great opportunity to join a small, family owned and operated fruit farm with plans to expand our operations. There is room to grow with us.
