CSA Distribution & Farm Stand Assistant

About the Organization: WFCF is a nonprofit organization in its 30th season of farming. In addition to running a mixed vegetable farm, WFCF’s operations include robust education and food access programs. WFCF supplies food to our CSA, our Food Access Programs (such as Mobile Outreach Market and Veg Rx), as well as local food access partners, Waltham Public Schools, and various events throughout the season.

About the Position: The Distribution Assistant helps make our CSA and Farm Stand a success. The CSA program at WFCF provides 20 weeks of farm fresh vegetables from early June through late October to over 400 families. This position assists the Farm Stand & CSA Manager in daily operations of the Farm Stand & CSA, ensuring guests have the best possible experience. This position also works closely with our Farm Managers to ensure CSA information is clearly communicated to shareholders and staff. This position includes working two CSA distributions per week. The Assistant is the point-person for Farm Stand staff and guests when the Farm Stand Manager is not present. Please note: This work can be physically demanding. Candidates should be able to repeatedly lift up to 40 pounds, should have an awareness of body mechanics and their own physical capabilities and limits.

The ideal candidate is enthusiastic about local food, interested in retail, and provides exceptional customer service.

General responsibilities include:

  • Provide support to the Farm Stand Manager in overseeing daily Farm Stand & CSA operations
  • Create a warm and welcoming atmosphere for all shareholders and guests on the farm
  • Follow protocols regarding opening and closing procedures, including money management
  • Assist in management of Farm Stand staff
  • Answer questions about the farm, products we sell, farm practices, CSA, and other relevant information
  • Help maintain a clean and orderly barn environment as well as surrounding areas

Farm Stand responsibilities include:

  • Receive retail deliveries ensuring for inventory and quality
  • Price & stock retail products with an emphasis on aesthetics
  • Confidently use the Square POS system for customer transactions including SNAP, HIP, and FMNP transactions
  • Assist & train Farm Stand staff on the POS system with the support of the Farm Stand Manager
  • Create signage for promotions, sales, and general product information
  • Maintain aesthetics, inventory, and merchandising of retail products with support of Farm Stand Manager

CSA responsibilities include:

  • Set up, break down and restock produce displays
  • Follow food safety guidelines for proper produce handling
  • Actively engage with shareholders about their CSA experience, recipes, and farm news
  • Follow CSA opening, closing and record keeping procedures
  • Confidently manage all aspects of CSA distribution when Farm Stand Manager is not present

Qualifications:

  • Experience with or interest in organic vegetable production, farm stand sales, and/or seasonal cooking
  • Previous experience in retail, food service, or other customer service environment
  • A friendly and welcoming demeanor and desire to engage with guests on the farm
  • Problem solving and quick thinking in a retail setting
  • A strong work ethic and sense of urgency when completing time sensitive tasks
  • Ability to prioritize tasks
  • Ability to work independently and in a team
  • Prior experience with POS systems is preferred
  • A positive attitude and sense of humor
  • Willingness to work in all kinds of weather
  • Strong verbal communication skills
  • Comfortable leading others in a positive and reliable manner
  • Ability to lift up to 50 and do heavy lifting repeatedly and safely throughout each shift as needed

Compensation: $17.00 /hour, 20% discount at the Farm Stand and vegetables from the farm when available

Hours/Dates: May – December / 13.5 hours a week June – Oct

  • Wednesdays 9:00 m. – 2:30 p.m. (June 4 – Oct 22; no shift July 2)
  • Fridays 12:00 – 7:00 m. (June 6 – Oct 24; no shift July 4)
  • Additional & Special Events
    • Seedling Sale: May 10 (7am -3pm) & Sat. May 17 (7am-1pm)
    • Farm Day: Oct 19th (12pm-5pm)
    • Extended Season distributions: 11/8, 11/22, 12/6 (8am-4pm)
