Hiring: Growers Assistant – Land’s Sake Farm

2021 ASSISTANT GROWER JOB DESCRIPTION
LAND’S SAKE FARM, WESTON, MASSACHUSETTS

Land’s Sake Farm in Weston, MA is looking to hire a Growers Assistant to join our farm and forestry team for the 2021 season! Assistant Growers can expect to be involved in all
manners of sustainable vegetable production. This position runs year-round and is full-time from the beginning of April to the end of November. Winter hours are reduced.
Land’s Sake is a nonprofit organization dedicated to building meaningful connections
between people, the food they eat, and the land. We run a 20 acre diversified vegetable
operation, 300 member CSA, market stand, and robust food donation program.
Additionally, we host an array of educational programs and have a long-standing forestry
management operation. Assistant growers will work closely with the LS team to help run a complex community farm operation. We also work with volunteers, workshares, and
children in education programs. We strive to make Land’s Sake a welcoming,
community-centered farm for all involved, including customers, shareholders, children,
volunteers, and staff.

This position operates on a Monday-Friday schedule starting April 5, 2021. During the
summer Assistant Growers can expect to work 50 hours/week. Winter hours will typically
be 25-30 hours/week based on available work, daylight, and weather conditions. Exact
hours and start times are subject to slight changes as daylight and workload shifts.

Responsibilities:
Main Season
● Field work (harvesting, planting, and weeding)
● Miscellaneous tasks (tomato trellising, fencing setup, and irrigation)
● Greenhouse tasks (seeding, watering, and potting up)
● Basic landscape maintenance on the farm (mowing, weed whacking, etc.)
● Some farm equipment usage
Winter
● Participate in forestry work and firewood production (chainsaw work, splitting,
stacking)
● Participate in maple syrup production (tapping, collecting, bottling, etc.)

Applicants should have a genuine interest in learning about sustainable agriculture. Field
crew members are expected to work quickly while maintaining attention to detail. Working
efficiently, independently, and with a team are equally important. Field crew can expect to
work long hours in all weather conditions. Many of the tasks we carry out on a regular basis are repetitive and physically demanding. Applicants with a strong work ethic and positive attitude will succeed in this role.

The work day starts at 7 AM sharp and goes through about 5 PM with an hour break for
lunch. Winter hours typically run from 8 AM to 4 PM. There may be occasional exceptions to end times when we need to complete work before a weather event, and there may be times when we cancel work due to hazardous weather.

Compensation:
● $14.00/hr

Qualifications:
A sincere interest in sustainable vegetable production and a positive attitude are a must.
Being flexible, open-minded, and engaged are equally as important. We aim to create a
welcoming work environment where asking questions is encouraged. The physical nature of our work necessitates that all employees are able to lift 50lbs repeatedly and work for long periods of time doing repetitive tasks. Applicants should have a reliable form of
transportation and ability to arrive at work on time. Applicants must have a valid driver’s
license and a clean driving record. Previous farm experience is strongly preferred.
Preference will be given to applicants who can work the full term of the position.
