Field Crew

Waltham Fields Community Farm (WFCF) seeks members for our 2017 Field Crew.  WFCF is a non-profit organization running a mixed vegetable farm & educational and food access programs just outside of Boston.  We adhere strictly to organic methods to manage fifteen acres of farmland.  The Field Crew works to support our farming operation, helping to supply food for our 465-share CSA, community members in need, and for various public events throughout the season. The Work:  The 5 person Field Crew works alongside farm staff in all aspects of vegetable production including greenhouse work, transplanting, harvest, cultivation, irrigation set up, and other field tasks on our 3 separate sites of operation (2 in Waltham, 1 in Weston).  Field crew members work from 8 AM to 4 PM Monday through Friday, with an unpaid one-hour break for lunch.

Qualifications:  We seek individuals who are hardworking, enthusiastic, able to do fast-paced physical work, and who love to be outside and get dirty.  A sense of humor is a definite plus! Applicants should be able to sustain focus through repetitive tasks with a positive attitude, be prepared to do strenuous physical work in all weather conditions and have a reliable form of transportation.  Crew members will be trained on proper techniques and approaches to all tasks.  Previous experience is not required, but a strong work ethic and the ability to work as a team are important qualities.  An on-farm working interview is required.

Compensation: $12/hour plus some produce from the farm.  Staff receive a discount at our farm store.

Hours/Dates: Monday-Friday, 8am-4pm (35 hours per week with a one hour unpaid lunch break).  In the case of extreme weather, there may not be work available for all or part of the day.

The position starts on June 12th, 2017 and ends on October 13th, 2017.  Must commit to the full 18 week period.

Skilled Tractor Driver

Waltham Fields Community Farm seeks a skilled tractor driver for the 2017 season.  WFCF is a non-profit organization running a mixed vegetable farm as well as educational and food access programming, just outside of Boston.  We adhere strictly to organic methods to manage fifteen acres of leased farmland.  Our farming operations supply food for our 465-share CSA, community members in need, Waltham Public Schools, and for various public events throughout the season. This position is suited for an individual with a minimum of 2 years comprehensive tractor experience using an array of implements.  You will be responsible for all manner of tractor work on our 3 sites (two in Waltham and one in Weston), including disking, flail mowing, chisel plowing, moldboard plowing, seeding, plastic laying, some roto-tilling, and belly-mounted and blind cultivation.  Must be comfortable safely driving tractors with implements and driving on the road, up to 1 mile between sites.

Qualifications:  Comfort and experience driving a range of tractors safely and efficiently.  WFCF uses Super As, a Ford 851, 40 HP Massey Ferguson & Kubotas (manual, glide or shuttle shift and hydrostatic transmissions) and a Kubota L245H.  Cultivation equipment includes a mix of belly mounted tools on the Super As and Kubota 245 and a Williams Tool System.  Must be proficient in quickly and safely changing implements and adjusting cultivation set-ups.  Comfort with PTO and ground driven implements.  Experience with light maintenance and mechanical troubleshooting preferred.

Compensation: $15/hour plus some produce from the farm. Staff also receives a discount at our farm store.

Hours/Dates: 20 hours/week, start and end dates somewhat flexible but roughly April 23-Sept 8

Weed Crew

Waltham Fields Community Farm seeks members for our 2017 Weed Crew.

WFCF is a non-profit organization running a mixed vegetable farm & educational and food access programs just outside of Boston.  We adhere strictly to organic methods to manage fifteen acres of farmland.  The weed crew will work to support our farming operation, helping to supply food for our 465-share CSA, community members in need, and for various public events throughout the season.  WFCF is committed to equal employment opportunity and does not discriminate based on race, nationality, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age or religion.

The Work:  The 4 person Weed Crew will focus mainly on hoeing and hand-weeding to maintain crop health and facilitate ease of harvest.  Each Friday, our weed crew leads and works side by side with farm volunteers.  As such, this position suits people who can work in large group settings but are also able to maintain motivation, pace and focus working as part of a small core team.

Qualifications:  We seek individuals who are mature, enthusiastic and able to do fast-paced, detail-oriented physical work, who love to be outside, and do not mind getting dirty.  A sense of humor is a definite plus. Applicants should be able to sustain focus through repetitive tasks, work outside in all weather conditions and have a reliable form of transportation in all weather conditions. Previous experience is not required but attention to detail and dedication to work are important qualities. This position is well suited for people with team sport or restaurant experience, recent high school grads or those with a budding interest in sustainable agriculture. An on-farm interview is required.

Hours/Dates: Monday-Friday, 8am-Noon, May 22nd -August 25th plus Saturday June 24th and Saturday July 22rd as part of our Crop Mob events. Another day off will be given the week preceding or proceeding the event to compensate for this. Must be available to commit to full 14 week period.
