NEPM: Sapowsky Farm Transition

What happens when a farmer retires? This week’s #localherospotlight explores exactly this topic.

Jennifer, Monte, and Kaliis visited Sapowsky Farm in Granby, where they learned about the decades-long friendship between the Sapowsky and McKinstry families. The McKinstry family has grown vegetables for McKinstry Market Garden in Chicopee since 1908.

In this episode, Steve Sapowsky and Bill McKinstry discuss farming, friendship, and how Will and Warren McKinstry, Bill’s sons, are in position to keep Sapowsky Farm going in Granby while managing it alongside McKinstry Farm. It’s a beautiful synergy, where Steve and Tammy get to retire, and the land stays as farmland while the community continues to enjoy fresh, local produce.
