Community Farms

We’re lucky to live in an area with a growing number of vibrant community-owned farms. Each one is different, but their activities often include farmland preservation and affordable land access, farm business incubation or farmer training, community engagement with agriculture and community garden space.

College & University Farms

Many institutions of higher education also operate farms or gardens for research and training purposes.  Their programs have proven to be a valuable training ground, and a number of farm businesses in the Pioneer Valley are operated by graduates of these programs.  College farms and gardens in our region vary quite a lot in their structure and staffing; Amherst College, for example, rents land to a farm business that provides some training activities and grows food for the college cafeteria, while Hampshire College’s Farm Center is staffed by the college.
